I dont understand the controls

Spoilers for those who are just starting the game. I know that there are these two characters that sometimes show up when you rewind the film. Sometimes they take over the film, sometimes its just an ethereal image over the film you are watching. Usually both of these are accompanied by the controller rumbling and the sound effect.

But sometimes my controller rumbles straight from the start of a scene and rewinding doesn't reveal anything. Sometimes rewinding a scene has a faint image of the other characters, but then when I do it again its more clear. The game is pretty interesting, but my confusion with the controls is adding to a frustration. Can someone explain it simply how it works

Alright, got it on my own. I had been using the RT/LT to rewind/fast forward the film since that was the easiest way because I felt like the sticks were wonky. Some of the scenes requires that you use the sticks to rewind the film slower than the LT can do. I just dont understand why sometimes using LT/RT to rewind/FF I could get different versions of the after image.

It is because the game is very poorly designed. I often did the same thing as you. I never used the sticks and I never scrubbed backwards. Well, almost never. A few times. I got to the ending without really seeing any of the special scenes and it didn't make much sense.
I did go back and figure out how to find some of them, but by that point it kind of ruined the experience.
They must not have had any game testers that play the way I do.
