5D Chess With Multiverse Time Travel

Isn't this game 4D chess?
The title is 5D chess but my count there are only 4 dimensions, rows, columns, history, and parallel universes/timelines ?

You're right, we only use 4. Check out the rules tab. The developers state that "The 5D in the name refers to the typical two spatial dimensions, a third unused spatial dimension, a fourth representing time and a fifth representing parallel timelines".

Because normal 2D chess is played in 3D, the added two dimensions make up 5D.

Or consider this: In 2D chess, you pick up the pieces, (use the THIRD dimension) to move them around. Otherwise, the pieces would need to phase through each other. In these 4D, you would need a 5th dimension to move these pieces around in. So I guess if you tried to play this game in full 4D, you would need 5D to make it happen!

Might as well call it 10D chess then. 4 dimensions that are used, and then 6 unused.
To put it another way, "5D" refers to the highest dimension represented within the standard order of dimensions, rather than the total dimension count:
1) length
2) height
3) depth (not represented)
4) time
5) abstract (in this case, parallel timeline)

Why not have a 3D isometric view of chess board? Will make the game true 5D.:ambition:

The problem with saying that the third spacial dimension is just "unused" is that whether or not its used doesn't matter as it would be purely aesthetic and the actual gameplay would still be 4 dimensional. A piece can move in the 2 dimensions on the standard board, backwards through time, or to a parallel universe; that is 4 dimensions.

This is 4D chess, yes.

In the 4th Dimension all time takes place at the same time, the only way there can be multiple parallel universes at the same time is if its 5D. So it is 5D chess regardless of what anyone says.

Okay, so it is 4D. It makes sense.

Read.

My view is that it's really Quantum Chess, but that's not the best name for a videogame.

Actually technically speaking it is not 4D for a very specific reason. The 4th dimension relates time changes to the board. As in, playing 4D chess would represent playing chess on a single board where you can undo/redo moves, utilizing time to change the outcome. In this case, you can make moves across the dimensions, and therefore are utilizing a new dimension. You have multiple boards in various time-frames which can interact.

In Soviet Russia, 5th dimension is YOU!

Yeah but it's made in a Chinese sweat shop so only 5.5 dimensions work.

4 and 5 are both time. There are two time dimensions here, otherwise itd just be a straight line like normal chess.
