How do you melee attack with xbox controls?

Melee attack isn't mapped to any button, you just shoot while in really close range to a monster

Mm okay. I just encountered a gate in the desert with a melee sign on it, and no matter what i did it doesn't open.

Ah, to open the gates you need to hit the crystal on the other side of them. You use the melee blast for that
