TL;DR: There are other factors than just "the fan base is bad".
First, yeah, 4+ difficulty does really start testing you. There's nothing to save you from surprise beat combos (thirds or short double taps) that switch from the expected patterns. For that, it just takes some time learning where they trick you. Failing that, you can always practice at slower playback.
1. I found the most important thing was to set the drums in the right position. Right, being, test out close/far/higher/lower positioning, practice with some simple tunes, and see what helps you get the most perfect rune hits (the sparks).
2. The audio you hear and the audible feedback of hitting the drums should sound/feel right. If not, play with latency in the settings menu. It goes positive -or- negative. That will help sync audio to your headset. I don't know how visuals are specifically affected.
3. I use WMR, Samsung Odyssey+. Headsets with inside-out tracking will affect physical accuracy. Fast motion (pretty much a requirement of a rhythm game) can trick WMR controls into a motion that isn't exactly what you're doing. Hopefully you have a Vive or Index. They're better suited.
4. Speaking of WMR. These lightweight controllers are made of semi-flexible plastic. The constellation rings are attached at only one point and have a tendency to physically.. wibble wobble. I doubt this helps tracking, If you feel this is a problem, you could change your play style. i.e. striking a drum like with a drumstick and bouncing your arm or wrist, vs swinging through the drum.
Also, consider if your center of motion is creeping around throughout a song. If you're arms are getting tired, or maybe you're leaning in more as the song goes, that small distance change might be complicating your timing. Paying attention to the fact may help keep you on target.
Hope this helps.
But there's plenty of 5-6 songs that don't require such precise movement, try Tortuga I found that one pretty easy for my first blue song.
Also, get gold scores on your favorite songs in 1, 2 or 3, just to practice. If you can get solid gold on every easy song you can probably get a decent score on the blue tracks too.
I practiced for perfects on songs with fewer notes so I could look down at the drums and see whether I was fast/slow based off where the glyphs were
The conclusion about perfects being very important is definitely correct :)
Latency setting: Messing with this increased my scores quite a bit. Enable viewing latency, then check it after a song. Mine was -15 so I set my latency to +10. Accuracy shot up about 10%. Like someone else said, accuracy is extremely important for a high score in this game. Crouching/drifting during play can reduce your accuracy too.
Combo bonus: always fill up to a gold bonus. It's 4x the points of the blue one. If you're at the end of a song and don't have time to fill up to gold, use the blue.
Hammers: Using a dark-colored hammer helped me see the yellow combo charge more easily.
Vibrations: leave these on, at least for a "successful hit". I tried turning them off a few times to save controller battery but it really messes me up when I have no feedback.
Practice: I'm slowly getting better. I managed 100% achievements and could reliably beat Expert songs in Beat Saber but it took quite a long time. This game feels harder, mainly because of the importance of perfect accuracy, but I'm enjoying the challenge and hope to get gold in all the songs some day.
