Well, it would make sense with a guitar hero or rock band drumset. But I guess that is too much to ask.
http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net
1) make hands and hammers invisible.
2) assign 4 keys from the keyboard to the 4 drums
3) make the hit detection flat on the drum surface for pressing the keys without the vertical height needed for hammers.
4) the rune shields will be destroyed when they are over the drums and the specific keys are pressed.
Don't think 3) is necessary. Just handle the key strokes, since there will be no more actual hits, we don't need hit detection.
I agree that a flatscreen version shouldn't be too much work. I could imagine that they are afraid of bad reviews when suddenly this turns from a great VR experience to what will probably be a "just alright" flat rhythm game. Anyway, I would absolutely be in favor of it. Doesn't take anything away from my VR experience, and more people get to enjoy the game.
Personally, I would suggest them another VR game for the future but this time with classical piano music from Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc. it would have the same principle as "hitting the drums with the hammers" but instead it would be "hitting the piano keyboard with the hands"
There are hundreds of fun classical pieces, plus they only need to "have a friend" to play them because licencing is practically non existent. There is a "piano game" like this on Steam called Deemo Reborn, but they seem to focus only on Japanese anime type of songs and not really much into international classics.
Hello, we launched Ragnarock non-vr a few months ago.
A splitscreen mode is already available in the game (only in the non-vr version).

Up to 4 players on the same screen :)
