Membership Note for New Players
There are a few membership packages that are being offered through the Steam store. These are not necessarily the best value!

If you purchase the membership through the RuneScape website directly the monthly cost is cheaper. Additionally, around November/December Jagex usually releases a "Premier Club" membership package which features discounted membership for 3, 6 and 12 months and gives you a bunch of boosts in-game as well.

So before you go and spend on a 3/12 month membership package through here, it might be more beneficial to hold off for a month and invest in the premier packages when they become available.

There is also an item you can buy in-game called a "Bond" which you can redeem for 14 days membership. As a new player, this will most likely not be possible for you to easily afford (since you earn in-game currency relatively slow at low levels), but as you get higher levelled it is entirely possible to sustain your membership without spending a single penny of your own money.

Hope this helps a few of you :) Feel free to send me an in-game message if you have any questions (been playing RS for 15ish years so should be able to offer a few pointers if needed!).

Also, when you start an account if you choose "Ironman mode" you can play the game without a good chunk of the MTX being in your face. The drawback is you are unable to trade with other players so it will make getting started in the game quite a bit more challenging. I'm an ironman on this account (Primal Puppy), so again if you are interested in starting an ironman and need help feel free to PM me :)

E: To pacify our overly hostile friend in the comments, make sure you know that you will be playing for the length of time you are purchasing membership for - you won't be able to get a refund for membership not used!

Also a note for new players which OP omitted for some reason: Jagex will NOT refund you if you choose to spend even a single minute of the membership you bought in the actual game, and then decide the game isn't fun, so these package purchases are only really intended for players who have already decided to stick with it in the long run

Didn't really omit it, just didn't think about it at all!

You're quite right though, definitely don't go spending on 3/12 month packages if you're not sure that you will stick around to use it since you will not be able to get your money back for it. Better off to play for one month and see if you like it, then by that time the premier club packages should become available (maybe end of November, I can't quite remember when they launched last year).

That is indeed how MMORPG subscriptions work, for the games that offer them. Obviously only those interested in making a long-term commitment would consider purchasing them.

This is common knowledge, so doesn't really need mention.

Just like it should be common knowledge that you don't go telling new players to buy expensive long term packages intended for dedicated players (aka NOT new players), but people keep doing it anyway

I am simply looking out for the one poor soul who might get baited into buying one of these packages because of OP, because he assumed you might be able to refund it if you don't like it, because why else would an experience player tell a new player to buy a package?

Your hostility is confusing me. Jagex are offering these expensive packages on the steam page directly with no indication that cheaper alternatives exist. I'm simply trying to help even one person avoid overpaying for something.

Whether they want to purchase a membership package for that length of time is none of my/your business. However, if they are going to splurdge on a 12 month membership it's better that they go for the cheaper options rather than getting shafted with the packages being offered through the steam pages.

E: I've added a note just for you in the main post Doosh - I hope this alleviates your concerns :)
