If you die outside of the wilderness recovering items from death doesn't cost much. There are also items like the ring of death that teleport you instead of killing you. Some items like chin run away when you die so be warned.
The wilderness will still drop your items when you die. Contents dead out there outside of select players who enjoy waiting or world jumping.
It's best to find an active clan that likes to do clan events in the wilderness and others will show up if you stay out there long enough.
PVP isn't completely dead and is still fun but it's not the same as old school runescape.

When you die you get sent to deaths office, and he lets you pay to reclaim your items. You can see how much it will cost you by clicking the skull & crossbones in your gear window. The price is actually very low compared to the value of your gear, so don't be too worried about dying.

However if you die in the wildy there are different mechanics, players can kill and take your stuff. If you die with a skull & crossbones above your head, (meaning you attacked someone first), you drop everything there.
There is content in the wildy, but for the most part you won't need to go there often at all.

buy a gravestone, it lowers the cost.

You can still run and get your stuff, gravestone

The only content i remember out in wild is:
Dungeoneering (First time only then you get a teleport ring)
Runecrafting through the abyss.
Some penguin hunting and treasure hunting stuff.
Couple of quests.
Big Agility course.

Just carry a teleport tablet around with you and you will be fine.
(Although i seem to recall Blood Mages being able to cast teleblock)

you can get to dung by talking to the boatman thats a little south of lumby and just west of al kharids bank. they can send yo there for free

the rc abyss is in very low wildy so you dont need to worry. its better to runespan tho, better xp but no items

yes on the penguin and treasure trail stuff. you dont need to go there for the penguins, theres alot in non wildy

the treasure trail can be a little annoying, but bring what it wants you to bring or items to build a hiddy hole (a "box" that allows you to put the items needed for the treasure trail in it). also not there only the highest treasure trail clues that "make" you go there.

the quests that were in the wildy got changed to not being in there. like a demon in edgevill got his own parth thats not in the wildy and the corporeall beast quest line sends you to a differnt place were only you are (it used to be in the wildy but that was when then wildy wasnt pvp)

(here might be one or two you need to go into the wildy for a sec, but just run in naked and you will be fine.

the agility is in there, but just go in naked and you should be fine. or just stick with the other agility places

so really op, you dotn need to ever go into the wildy. also, noone ever goes in there now. i can remember. sure, theres more people in there now that pvp worlds died (rip).

just go in with nothing or a wep and your fine

And if you have an elite clue that looks like it's pointing you to the wilderness, check Daemonheim first. 80%+ of the time it'll be there.

To actually answer OP's question: the only way to reclaim your items on death for free is to run back to where you died without dealing with Death. In early levels this has no drawbacks, but once you get to the point in the game where you start getting degradable gear (levels 80+ in most cases), these degradable items will partially degrade whenever you choose to not pay Death for your items

To the guy suggesting the use of Ring of Death: are you okay in the head? This is obviously a new player and you're suggesting them to use a tier 90 item (which doesn't even remove any cost, it juts replaces it by a fixed cost based on Onyx prices, which currently is about 800k). Please never post again
