attacking higher level enemies not worth it for xp?
I'm trying to level up my combat stats, so I figured I would do what I do in most games and attack enemies that are higher level than me. In my dabbling, I noticed that it seems like these harder enemies give about three times as much XP, while taking more than 3x as long to kill. Am I correct in my assumption that attacking harder enemies (their names are red) is not worth doing even if it is possible?

done damage equals exp so lvl does nothing to increase your gains

That's OS and pre-EoC. That is not how combat XP is determined anymore. Each monster has a specific amount of XP assigned to it that you receive upon killing it, and, while it does follow the general pattern of "more hp=more xp," this relationship is not linear, nor does more HP always equal more XP.

Enemies will always give the same amount of XP per kill. You won't get more for killing things above your level. Like a cow will always give X amount no matter what, so will a Dragonkin Soldier always give Y amount.

If you're getting 3x the XP but it takes you 3x longer to kill them, you're better off just doing things your level. I'd recommend the Abyss for training though, thanks to the most recent update it's entirely risk free.
Don't view level as the biggest determining factor in how strong an enemy is. It's not like MMOs that follow the EQ template where your accuracy is greatly reduced against higher level enemies.

However, in this case I'd guess that accuracy is an issue for you, as I'm guessing your weapon is probably fairly low tier, which means very low accuracy.

This post I quoted here is not a correct answer to the original topic of this thread.

This is correct

The higher the level the more experience you gain per enemy. So find a monster with low hp, but a high level that is in one square with many of them around to afk at forever. Deadly red spiders, abyssal demons, hellhounds, and Turoths come to mind for me.

Again, while it does follow that general pattern, it is not necessarily the case. For example, Lampenflora are level 216, while Brutish Dinosaurs are level 164. The former gives 1396 combat xp, while the latter gives 2757.
Try fighting the hardest enemy you can kill with it still being easy
The monsters your level range's slayer master can assign are a good guideline

actually I do have a question about slayer quests. Is the reward gold? Everytime I kill the number of monsters I go get a new quest from the slayer, but I've never noticed a an option to ask about the reward. Additionally, the one is the beginner area only offers very easy to kill monsters, to get harder assignments I take it I just need to talk to a slayer dude in a harder area?

You get slayer points when you complete tasks. You can talk to the masters to redeem those points, for things like equipment, training, and unlocking other crafting or monsters to kill.
awesome, thanks for the tip

The main rewards for slayer are the drops the monsters themselves drop. Slayer points are a secondary reward.
