Membership can be redeemed via Bond if you can't afford it: if someone is willing to buy you a Bond in-game you can redeem it for 14 days of membership. I wouldn't consider buying membership until you're a week in, then you'll see how bottlenecked you are. Eventually you will need to purchase membership to progress. Staying F2P is one of those things that stops you from experiencing the game fully. Clans won't want to invite you if you're not a member, you won't be able to experience the Questlines, you're incredibly limited when it comes to skills and exploration, etc. It something you will have to do to progress. If you can't i would just quit now.

you have many many hours of playing before you need to get membership, by then you should be able to generate enough currency to buy a bond and see what its all about.

getting a bond from the start is not needed since the benefits for a new player is minimal at the begining.

You can play the game and get member status without paying by buying bonds with gold from the grand exchange (player market in Varrock if you've not been there yet), there are a few ways of getting the gold for a bond. A quick search shows this as one of the methods:

Regarding clans this is not entirely true..some clans do accept f2p..the last clan i guested in was willing & did have a few f2p players but they did only have 37 members at the time

Most budding Clans expect you to cap and/or the benefit of being in a clan isn't about the environment but rather the xp buffs that come with it. The inability to participate in Citadel work and buffs make being in a Clan as a free player pointless.

No, you don't need it. Just play the game, level up your skills, save some gold coins and when you're bored you can buy bond with your saved gold and try membership :selphinehappy:
