The player base of RS3 is inflated by Ironmen, (accounts that are limited and can't trade with other users or use the market to buy items) who are also online while someone's main is online. Simply put: almost everyone has a main account running and also an Ironman running. It's not limited to just one, I've seen people run up to 6 Ironmen at once while maining an account. This inflates the number of 'online' players substantially. This isn't limited to RS3, it's an OSRS feature as well. In reality there's about half of the player count or two thirds of the player count in that overall number which could be allocated to '1 user'. I think each version of the game has a niche and dedicated player base but overall stagnated by a false inflated player count.
OSRS is very popular but of late a lot of those players have been finally giving RS3 a chance. Many like it while others still swear by OSRS.
The numbers have always been kind of fuzzy though, for both.
RS3 is the same tbf, it's gotten REALLY bad over the past months.
They really aren't hidden at all, you will see them all the time either at the ge burying bones, or doing ed3 Trash Runs, same gear every single time, batwing armour, polypore staff, glory amulet and Ring and finally, an Obsidian cape, this was a hot topic last week across basically any known Runescape YT content creator that it is a massive problem, they are far from well hidden, and don't even get me on the archaeology bots that appear on free worlds...

I've been playing for almost 1800 hours, believe me, they're everywhere.
Maybe you should visit the Sophanem Slayer Dungeon or any of the Archaeological material caches or dig sites or countless other areas in the game where hundreds of bots passing as alts are doing their thing.
My point exactly.
Was having this discussion with Brilly the other day and I said exactly that, I don't have a problem with alt accounts per say, but when you have these sweats that have 20 alts farming nothing but Corrupted Scorpions, that's crossing the line, by a long shot.
Yeah, my point too. The abuse is clear and that's probably what's causing this recent rash of alt bans.
My guess is that most of them cannot be actually manually played by anyone at the same time which means that some form of macros are being used which is most definitely against the rules, paid accounts or not.
