RuneScape
Can't decide on a combat style
I've mostly just been skilling. I have 81 magic, 70 or so ranged, and like 60 attack/str.

I like magic, but I heard that once you really dig into combat it hits a wall. Should I change my focus before I invest too far down the line?

No. Eventually you'll want all combat skills max if you're going to do pvm, and outside of combat magic is by far the most useful.

Especially in the slayer skill, you will come across monsters that are extremely resilient to 2 of the 3 styles of combat so you will need to train all 3 eventually. If you want, you can add me, and I can go into further detail.

all of them
I get that the community recommends getting every skill to 99, but I just started and I'm not going to do that first, so which combat skill works best?

its not that we want you to max out, but in combat, certain enemies have resistances to certain attacks. HOWEVER

If you want a reccomendation from what you should start with now, I would reccomend sticking to melle, then probably training magic or range, however, getting magic done early allows you access to teleportation to locations and enchantments, since magic offers skilling oppurtunities.
At this point, pick which one you like best. The info you'll find on which ones are best will mostly be talking about level 99 with top-end gear and perks, a full set of which for one combat style will cost you several billion gold, as well as unlocking abilities that can cost billions more.

Or just do slayer and train all three, using the one for your task that fits the best.
Pick whichever one you like best, some monsters have specific weaknesses to certain attack types so you'll have to level them all at some point.

Hiya just to give advanced caution for future combat levels if you push too far into say magic & ranging it will have an adverse affect later on..for myself i got magic & prayer to 99 first while neglecting other combat skills for myself to get 131 to 132 now requires almost the rest to almost 90 & over
meele is prob the easiest to lev up. mage and range you always need ot be bying runes or arrows

but it all ends in what you feel best doing and stick with that. also lev up the others like the above posts have said
Some of the others have said things which may not be fully understood by a new player. Saying that some monsters are weak to one form of attack basically means they use one themselves which tends to make them immune to similar attacks from the player.

For example, if you're using magic exclusively and come up against a monster that also uses magic but is weak to ranged attacks, you won't be scoring many hits against him, meaning that you'll be spending a awfully long time trying to take him down while he will be doing damage against you since he will most likely be higher leveled than you are.

At this point, since you are new and low leveled, it's fine to just stick to whichever one is more fun for you to play but as you get into Slayer and move around the game world more, you will encounter monsters that use 2 of the 3 styles available and is capable of switching between them as they fight you. You will need to be ready for that by countering their moves.

You'll learn more about the Combat Triangle later on (which attack form is best against the others, namely: Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic and Magic beats Melee) so you'll better understand how important it is to use the correct equipment and weapons and attack styles in order to train more efficiently.

You will need to train them all as well as Prayer and Summoning. They don't all have to be done at once but you will need them down the road.
Taking into account what everyone else said, IMO level attack strength and defence for now, solid 80s on all your combat stats will take you far

Here's what it boils down to man

- Magic is the most versatile and currently the most powerful.

- Melee is BY FAR the cheapest style to upgrade, its not even a contest.
Currently Magic is the least powerful for endgame.

It doesn't make them immune, it just makes the more likely to be hit by certain styles than others. I, for example, had no issue finally getting to 99 ranged last double xp weekend while using it on slayer tasks killing corrupted workers, even though ranged is the style they're most resistant to.

That said, some monsters will be immune, or virtually immune, to some attack styles or all but one. A few examples: Rune Dragons require dragonbane ammunition for their first phase, Nex will use different protection prayers during different phases, Tormented Demons will cycle through different protection prayers. In general, however, what I said in the previous paragraph applies. Using a monster's weakness will make you more efficient at killing it, but it's not generally required.
