Smelting bars or smithing arrowheads/dart tips is good and moderately to very afk. Mining is alright, it's not particularly afk unless you want ♥♥♥♥ rates from an empty stamina bar though.
Buying stuff from npc stores and selling on the ge/flipping stuff on the ge is decent to excellent money, but the npc store runs take a fair amount of work, the flipping is in a sense even more work in that it requires you know what you're doing, and both really suffer from the f2p ge slot limit.
Archaeology is ok, though obviously fairly harshly level capped.
Generally the best tip of all is that 2 alts working on afk stuff is better than 1 account working on active stuff. Especially if you still have your one main playing for fun at the same time.
However I don't think anything in F2P won't involve constantly running a long distance to a bank.
You would have to keep killing cows for it, but off of the top of my head you should be able to get the explorer's ring 3, farm potatoes in the allotment at the falador farm, kill the cows that are there while you wait for the potatoes to grow (assuming free players can use that patch), and cabbage-port back to the farm after every run to the bank or the Entrana deposit box.
I'd have to check there's no random patches of cows out in the wilderness or something to say for certain, but that might be the worst place in FtP to kill them.
Potato runs aren't bad if you keep an eye on the time, but whether they're worth breaking your rythm at something else...
You won't gain XP for it once you hit the F2p cap.
Oh, and once you hit the level cap in a skill, be that the free to play cap in members skills, 99 in skills that only go up that far, or 120 in skills that go to 120, you can go talk to a challenge mistress to disable getting daily challenges in that skill. You should definitely do that for p2p skills in f2p.
