Banned Account, macroing, not even sure what's this
So I was trying to log in a few hours ago and couldn't as the link with Steam seemed to be not working properly, so I've tried with my email, and got a message saying that my profile is banned due to macroing; I've read through Runescape's T&C but I cannot identify what I could have done to be banned. I've also appealed to remove the ban, but already had confirmation that this is definitive.

Can't say I'm too happy about that, as I was willing to give Runescape a shot after hearing about it so much. Is this common? Has this happened to anyone else before? I don't plan on b*tching about this too much, but I'm actually curious on what triggered this ban. Any input is appreciated, thank you

What people call macroing is using third-party software to automate actions on your account.

Thanks @snowskeeper; I'm pretty sure I didn't set anything to automate actions within Runescape, or even logging in triggers as I have no idea how to do that :D Oh well, I'll sadly look for another MMORPG

Sorry to hear that; good luck.

If you had some other program open at the same time sometimes those can be detected as macros. Other than that idk. if you just made the acc you dont have to do much work to get back to where you were.
Downside is if they got banned now and they really didn't do anything if they go ahead and make a whole new account will probably just trigger it again. Probably best they put a ticket in.

OP already made an appeal.

One does not simply get banned for "really didnt do anything" i dont care what anyone says.
Which is why you're speculating that they were banned for "having another program open in the background," right?

Do you have any idea how detecting things like that works?

They have never revealed details about how they flag certain accounts and ban them because obviously if they were to do that, they'd be making it far easier for the cheaters to devise software that would defeat those detection methods.

That is most likely on your own or your ISP's since literally hundreds of thousands of players around the world can and do stay connected to their servers. There are, of course, times when the servers have issues but they aren't all that frequent enough to be bothersome to most players.

Try checking your connection, your ISP and perhaps your system to see if throttling may be an issue or perhaps even some bottlenecking somewhere that may be causing you to disconnect or suffer poor connections.

it is not some protected secret, they do the same thing any other game does to detect these things. there is not some proprietary method they have that is unique to runescape lol. they watch pixels for "non randomized input", the macro makers devise randomized offsets to the clicks, Jagex counters by watching for fluctuations (nobody is going to sit still in their chair and move the mouse in a odd pattern and click a separate spot every time, and nobody is going to sit and click the same spot in equal intervals, over and over) really, there is an element of "random, but not so random" in human interactions with a user interface, and computers are caught by finding the commonality in the action, because every "macro" or software has to be programmed and follow a program. even if its random, eventually it wont seem so random. even a broken clock is right twice a day, and even a program has to have a beginning, middle, and an end.

The reason I asked that question was mostly just, like. Anti-cheat software capable of viewing other programs on your computer typically causes something of a stink when it comes out, and as far as I know, Runescape is not capable of doing that.

Macros are discouraged because they're difficult to distinguish between legitimate actions, say, something attributable to a mouse key macro and a piece of software such as a trainer. It's best to not use an auto-clicker. The game is pretty much afk enough as it is. They taken great pains to ensure that most resources don't get exhausted now so you just have to click once in a while to keep that grind going. An auto-clicker would be of little use these days.
