They get much better some quest lines cover you all the way up to levels in the 80s
and those all have a strong story line that follows quest to quest
Try one piercing note next, afaik it doesn't have any requirement to complete it
That will give you a better idea of the quests
As for longevity, you can't win this game, there is no finish line
people have goals like comp cape that can take 3 to 10 years and longer for some
Everyone has their own set of goals or they just consider it a 2nd home to meet friends and chat
Just do 400 or 500hrs then see how you feel about the game, you'll have touched the tip of the ice berg by then
https://secure.runescape.com/m=forum/forums?290,291,goto,1
try these too , social clans
a)nostalgia thats why there are so many players both in these version (Runescape3) and esp in "Old School RuneScape"
b)basic logic sense - most of those players played YEARS ago, maybe for a month -and now returning to game when it appear on steam. BAM - "15 year cape granted"
Ahem - are you sure thet "MMORPG" as a genre are games for your liking?
Esp a genre of "skilling/grinding MMORPG" with no strong "main quest line"
That type of game is actually "time intensive, and playtime mostly consist : GRIND
BUT
Runescape also have like 400+ quest
i think 100+ mingames
"Distractions" - those are mostly mini-events like "evil tree/shooting star/etc"
Clan wars ans stuff
And more
So, yea - there re stuff to do for a YEARS (esp grinding those skills to high tiers)
BUT thing you probably also missing is
c)membership -you NEED membership to enjoy Runescape, and a lot of "old players" here spread LIES how you "can play as F2P yada yada" fact is: 90% players have membership (info from main Runescape page)
So, while Runescape is not "best MMO-RPG" there is, esp with that outdated graphic, and hell of inventory menagement (like seriously? whole 25 inv slots for me?) it seams you have problem with genre, not only with Runescape
The determination of how and when capes (5, 10 and 15 year capes) are made based on when the character was created, not how long they have played.
Don't feel as though you're missing something if you don't immediately get how addictive playing this game can become. It won't attract everyone. You just have to explore it on your own and see if something appeals to you. If it doesn't, then try something else. If that still doesn't help, then maybe it just isn't for you.
There's no limit to the number of ways this game can be approached. For some, there's a joy in trying to limit themselves by how they play the game. Some go for pure skilling, refusing to train any of the combat skills. It's a tough path to follow but for them, that's the fun. For others, they enjoy questing. The rewards can be good for most it's the adventure and challenge of completing said quests and the new areas and things that are opened up because of them.
For yet others, they enjoy the challenge of survival. Ironman and Hardcore Ironman were created for just those sort of players. Perma-death, the exclusion of many perks and advantages that normal training affords them. They essentially have to do nearly everything for themselves. They can't buy or trade things as other players do. They must make what they need on their own. And death carries a heavy penalty.
So, read up some more on what your options are. Learn more about what the game has to offer. Watch a ton of videos about various aspects of the game. And then jump in and try to find out what interests you most. You might be surprised to find one day that a couple of years have gone by without your notice. But it's okay too to just admit it's not for you. Not everything can be.
Have fun.
I was checking old accounts today just to see if anything useful on them
One is 12yrs old with 6 hrs played lol but it still could have the 10 yr vet cape if it wanted
I have 12k hrs played on my main and maybe 4k hrs on alts
I tend to no life the game for 4- 6 mths then walk away for 6 mths or longer

I mean what happened to them to make them that bitter and twisted
I'm guessing those guys ended up in dead end jobs living in a trailer and Runescape just brings back too many memories of the good times before their lives went so wrong
We should all pity them
Mostly they started in 04 or 06 so you might know some of them
+100
Grind is good, although RS has a LOT less of it now and as essentially a single player game in many ways, it's all optional
I didn't much like it when I started playing years ago. It wasn't until I really started to get into questing and (perhaps ironically) Smithing that I started to really enjoy the game.
I know Smithing is an odd hook for people, but for me, it was the idea that you didn't just *get* money to get gear (although that was an option.) For me, I enjoyed being able to make my own equipment instead of just buying it from a shop somewhere.
Anyway, my point is that some people fall in love with it straight away, some people have to warm up to it first, and some people just never enjoy it. Maybe you need a little more time to start seeing what the game can truly offer and start playing, or maybe you never will. I can't say for certain. Maybe some proper quests (not stuff like Cook's Assistant, but more like Dragon Slayer) will be better for you!
I should have mentioned that I am a massive mmo fan. I started playing in 1997 when everquest 1 first came out and I've pretty much played them all since. I think my post was long enough and I was trying not to waffle (too late I know)
Because of that I also understand that the 15 year rewards are often returning players, I too have many such rewards for Everquest 2 but it's because of my mmo background that I'm struggling so much with RuneScape and why I want to love it. For example, I keep returning to eq2 because I love it so much, so these returning players must have that too. Of course there is nostalgia attached but there must be more also. It's that, that I want to tap into.
And while I used the fetch me 3 ingredients quests in my original posts, the reason was that was all I was doing. There was no 'other' content, like fighting through dungeons to find said artifacts. It felt like for much of my now 9 hours in-game I was just running around the first town, then running around the second.
I really appreciate everyone's time in replying here and if nothing else you have shown me a real passion for the game that I knew was there. I will keep trying, oh and I paid for a month of membership.
Thx all,
Art
When a friend of mine introduced me to it in 2006 all I saw was the insane grind that you need to advance, but actually the story line became more apparent later on.
Now that you have membership, I would have a go at getting to Menaphos, or going through the archeology basics.
The quests in Ardougne are also really good, especially Plague City, the starting quest to get into one of the most beloved cities in the game.
Also the RuneScape wiki is a great starting point and guide for everything you need.
For example here is a list of the quest lines:
