Protect your account
This is obvious to most but I'm gonna post it anyway.

Runescape has been around a long time. The hacking/evil community is just as experienced as the player/good community. You need to take EVERY step to protect your account.

I started playing RS3 last week. On my 4th day, my account was hacked. I know this for sure from responses from Jagex Customer Support.

At the time, I had email verified, and I had the authenticator on, but apparently from what I was told, whoever got into my account did it through my steam account before the authentication had even gone through. It is MY OPINION that there are hackers targeting new Runescape accounts on steam.

So a couple tips would be:

-Change all your passwords every year. Every email, every game account, every digital distribution service account. If hackers can get one piece of information, they can use that to infiltrate your other accounts.

-Get the email authentication

-Put 2 step verification on your email associated with steam

-Assign the authenticator on your Runescape account to goto your phone

-SIGN UP FOR A BANK PIN
I didn't know about this when I started but a bank pin is something in game that is an extra password (so to speak) to your bank, which in RS is where all your money and items are stored. If someone hacks into your account, they still need to enter your bank PIN to access your stuff. It is an extra layer of protection that will help protect your items and money.
-You can do this via a little tab that looks like a key and lock in your bank interface.
-The bank PIN takes 7 days to apply so do it immediately.

If you don't know how to do any of this please look up guides on Youtube and check the Runescape website, it is also located at the login screen.

Do ALL of these things even before you start playing, and keep up with it. I know its video games and we're all here to have fun but in a game like Runescape your time is valuable and you won't want to have your time wasted because a hacker stole all the stuff you worked for.

Also, again, I was a fresh account with low money and valuables so it can happen to anyone, no matter how long you've been playing.

I'd add to make sure you add symbols and upper case letter to your password as well

So you didn't have Steam secure? Be glad all they stole was your Runescape account.

If you have Steam Guard enabled (which you should), the only way a scammer could possibly gain access to your Steam RS account is if they had a way into your email account to get the Steam Guard code. Otherwise it would be impossible for them to log in to your account. But yeah if you wanna be extra sure 2FA is the way to go.

I have 2 step for Steam and Runescape and my password is generated by my security suite. I'm good to go.
But yes, people. Listen to OP. Double secure your account like me and use a ridiculously strong password. It will keep the hackers away from your hard work.

If they got through steam, then your security on steam needs improving.

If you got a phone and the authenticator for steam? you can link that up and make sure the guard is on as well. so long as you have good security habits on Steam and Runescape with 2FAs, good strong passwords and different emails with the 2FA on another device from Steam and Runescape, you'll be fine.

That should be all the security you need going forwards, but yes, as for your bank stuff, so long as the Runescape service offers a strong secured web address for transactions to take place, you should be fine on that end as well.
