What you're supposed to do? Whatever you want, the game is extremely open and pretty much anything will progress your account. Early on, you may want to focus on doing quests, levelling where you need to to unlock them.
Hi Im Swat Apr 15 @ 10:23am
I can’t help but feel you don’t know what an MMORPG is.

The wiki has a handy new player guide if you want some structure to your sandbox: https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/New_player_guide
Prepare to dump all your free time into this otherwise you wont make any progress thats what you need to do.

You do whatever you want to do. There is no correct or wrong way of playing this game.

I would start by looking at the skills and picking one to learn. I believe you start out in Lumbridge after the tutorial island is completed. There are trees to cut nearby for woodcutting, use the tinderbox to burn the logs (or go to the top level of the nearby castle and use the bank to deposit and save), if you go across the bridge nearby you can train combat on goblins and there are cows to kill further along the path.

Essentially, the main goal is to get all skills to level 99 (or beyond exp wise) and do all the quests and collection logs and bosses.

Talk to the Lumbridge guide he'll give a bunch of starter instructions. There should also be a few other tutors in Lumbridge to remind you how to go about raising skilling or doing combat.

Other than that its MMORPG you just walk around skilling and doing quests.

Quests are marked on your minimap as little blue and white compass. There's a few starter quests in lumbridge like the Cooks assistant or sheep shearer. The quests will tell you their difficulty level before you accept them. Or you can look at your quest guide and filter by difficulty.

For new player i'd suggest exploring Lumbridge and it's immediate area.for a bit, Find the bank, do a bit of skilling at each the tutors to get a quick reminder of how it works again. These tutors are marked on the minimap by a blue icon with their skill type(Example: the Fishing tutor is south of Lumbridge marked by a blue icon with a fish on it).

Engage some chickens cows, and goblins in combat, for some combat XP and remember to eat food to heal.

Then set out to other towns or zones to keep improving your skills so you can take on higher difficulty quests.

run. escape. repeat.

no, really:

runescaperepeat.

you may also see people saying "taeperepacsenur". this looks like a norse word (read it backwards!!) and people often say it in the viking realm. it is merely runescaperepeat spelled backwards.

After 29 years wondering on this world I see the first time ever the "Run/escape" in "RuneScape". Is this Pun within the gamename intended? :D

Anyways:

There is a icon underneath the Minimap, named "Open Activity Adviser". Very useful, it shows you where you could/should start questing or go next.

False, there is a 100% right way to play this game and if you fail to follow quests early you'll suffer through intense grinds when you could have completed quests for the skill levels.

Veteran players will always act snotty to you on simple questions so go have the wiki on speed dial..

Use a quest guide..

Be a self sufficient neet and never talk to anyone because all you'll get is "I'll double your money if you give me 50mil, now go buy some bonds"

"Quit asking dumb questions, go watch a guide"

Playing a old MMO is always like this, take it from someone who played classic WoW when it released in 2019 and now dealing with the anniversary fresh start servers. You deal with wannabe old men who didnt make it in 2005 so they project their anger in a new classic release copying the times of those days.

OSRS is no freaking different. When I was a kid I wasnt treated this way because others around me were the same or similar. The toxic one's back then were players from the super early versions which led to RSC.

New players, the only way to enjoy this game is 2 things.

Either download a open source version of whatever client you want with runescape..

OR start your own clan and find others like you, dont join a clan with people who claim to be casual because most of them have already blasted everything the game has to offer and make multiple iron man accounts and generally dont want to deal with your nub questions.
