Superheat Item is a great stepping stone to Higher Level Alchemy, both which are very useful for mining and smithing. I did not make an effort to level up magic but it is my highest stat and it feels effortless to raise it. So I do think it is a good use because you will be getting a range of experience. Mining and making steel is what I am currently doing but I used to do Adamant and Mithril, it's just too much inventory management to feel comfortable with (you are not making money with steel due to Nature rune usage, but I have enough that it does not matter). The best benefit of adamant is that it is worth a ton per bar when turned into equipment and converted with alchemy, but it is not a fast way to train smithing and mining with low money as quickly as possible.
