Genuine question, no intention to offend anyone. Why do you play this?
I just can't imagine how anyone, unless playing on a computer built in from the windows XP age which can't do anything else, would decide to play this over literally any other option.

Is undying nostalgia the only reason?

If we're talking strictly from a F2P perspective, in 2021, there's so many other games that would provide far more content.
If we're talking about the full "paid subscription" experience, why would you ever consider it worth it?
Paying 10$ dollars a month to play a game that was made 15+ years ago and plays like it.
The majority of the content is the most busiest work possible to anything grindy.

There is no visual appeal (other than the initial appreciation of the classic artstyle).
there's no voice acting of any sorts to establish character.
The OST although very nostalgic for someone who has played this as a kid; is nothing special.
There is no "combat" you mouse click on a target and wait for it to die. sometimes changing passive buffs or a weapon during the fight or opting to click somewhere else on the map to run away.
The bits of content that you could consider enjoyable are locked behind a long journey of trial and error and grind.
I doubt anyone plays this for plot/story.
Although the game is an 'MMORPG', as to my knowledge, the "PARTY" mechanic is very very limited. Most content , unless designed specifically to hold more than one player, revolves around you only and other people just exist around you completing tasks for themselves in the same location.

So there's no graphical appeal. No sound appeal. No combat appeal. No story or characters to be attached to.
You have to pay money MONTHLY ( or grind even more to pay) for more content. The gameplay loop IS the grind.

I don't see how any person who just wants a new game to play would look at this ancient creation and think this would be something worthy of his time.

It may sound hypocritical as a gamer myself to use the words "waste of time" as any gaming is technically a huge waste of our time, but playing this literally feels like wasting your life away.

I prefer some privacy and it isn’t anyone’s business why i played today

I love how you say this while you're demanding to know why people play Runescape

BIG hypocrite.

What sort of strawman is that?

I’m asking for peoples opinion about a game.
No one here is forced at gunpoint to answer or post.

regardless this has nothing to do with me not wanting people to know what i played 5 minutes ago at a click of a button.

Are you really that worried about "wasting your life away"? That implies that there is some purpose you should be fulfilling, and I'd hate to break it to you, but the universe doesn't care if you spend your time playing this or completing those trash Spyro games. You should just fill your meaningless life with unimportant activities that you enjoy, and eventually, you will be dead.

You claim playing games are a waste of time, yet you own a steam account.
Very interesting. :headcrab:

I specifically said that i game quite often myself ( maybe not as much these days cause the older we get the busier we are ). I just fully acknowledge that it’s technically a “waste of time”, but it’s okay. We’re here for such a short time and having fun and silly hobbies is important.
my point although granted hypocritical, is that to me it feels like OSRS is even a “bigger waste of time” for rather obvious reasons.

if you enjoy something it's not a waste of time. To some people playing this is a waste of time, but hanging outside and random chit chatting with some people u know is not considered that even tho during it you might get more exhausted, bored and so on. It's all perspective.

if something gets your soul high and does you good, then do that over what's expected to be a /not a waste of time/.

This game's got charm, the graphics are great imo, the world too. Though i don't play it as much lately, when you don't have much free time, it actually feels like a waste to spend that little time hitting a tree, unless you just wanna fill your hunger for osrs (if you have it). Otherwise my point is, when i got little time id rather play something that yields a different result, another game, online or not, because if you spend 4 hours woodcutting the result is the same every time.

I completely agree.
But as you mentioned on the second paragraph, I’m sure you can find something more enjoyable than cutting a tree for 4 hours or more exciting than to watching automated animations play out after you click a pixelated giant.

My overall question is not “why do you play games” but “why do you play this game”.

Although my criticism this is all obviously subjective and i never attempted to offend anyone.

I also want to know because; I am curious about this mmo, it feels like it has a cult following, and I'd like informed opinions on why they play this mmo and not the others. Is there something this mmo offers that no other mmo can offer, other than nostalgia? Because, I'd like to try it.

Its always how you look at it and what your next goal is in a game. As you answered it yourself, any game can be seen as a time waste.
I spent like 1000 hours in gta san andreas trying to speedrun los santos.

OSRS for me is a "2nd monitor filler" I passivly play it just to fill up time. I also had a phase where I grinded woodcutting and mining on like 15 accounts at the same time.

My very first time playing
The first dozend hours in Runescape I was extremly clueless and I kept quitting the game and came back out of boredom. I probably never played more than 2 hours at a time. I only start getting invested when I got osrs videos recommended on yotube showing me, that this game actually does have more to offer than I always thought.

I like the quests, i know most people hate them but they are like puzzles that require a bit of thought if you dont just look up a guide. They aren't just "go here, kill that" like most rpg/mmos ive played. Also your account is something you can always add to, whether its making more money, gaining levels, doing quests. It all has value no matter how often you play. Unlike WOW for example where all the progress you've made is pointless after the next expansion comes out. Also i think you oversimplified combat, yes the basics is click on enemy and attack, but when you get a bit more into it and learn about prayer flicking, tick manipulation and other things i dont understand, it can get complex

As someone who started playing OSRS around a year ago I can say. This is one of the biggest MMOs with the smallest amount of limitation. On a lot of MMOs you find your character is forced into one playstyle however with OSRS that's (normally) not the case. The PVM is very unique and fun when it comes to bossing although it does seem simple and boring earlier in the game. Also I would like to point out that in OSRS you have the ability to buy membership using your ingame currency meaning it's one of the only MMOs where you're not tied down to paying $10/month to even touch the game.

I think a lot of what the game is for me is the fact that it's something I can play with little concentration on the side, or it can be fast paced and super fun. The game in general has a lot of variety and can tailor to a vast array of playstyles whether that be questing, skilling or PVM.

I can see how the graphics of the game can be a turn off since there are way more traditionally appealing games. You find that with time the graphics start to grow on you. The simplistic polygon design which somehow Jagex seem to make really beautiful and diverse is super impressive.

As someone who never played this game as a child and instead joined recently. I have noticed how little new players join. This is quite sad and I do feel it's mainly due to the steep learning curve and the untraditional graphic design.

Since my friends are in the same boat as most new players, being that they don't like the graphics, I found I spent most of my time solo until recently. Joining the large amount of Clan Chats and discord dedicated to different elements of the game adds a whole new exciting social aspect to the game. Meaning you can do stuff like community events .

I will say as a recommendation to new players, try out RuneLite.net, it's a 3rd party client that adds a bunch of QoL features and can make the game a lot more beginner friendly. It can also make the graphics look nicer in some people's opinion with the use of the GPU plugin.

Fundamentally, this game has to be one of the most fun games I've ever played, never running out of goals, a plethera of different things to do (including minigames). I just feel if you persevere through your initial doubts regarding the game you will find yourself really enjoying it.

I've played since 07, left and went to WoW for about 7 years while playing osrs off and on. The one thing that brings me back is the skill capes. It only look 10+ years for me to get my Quest cape but I love it. Now after the achievement dairy cape which will take WAY to much time but It's worth it to me. This game has gave me more pain and trouble questing, killing bosses than any other game I've played. If this game didn't have capes for accomplishments then I probably would have stopped long ago.

Also pvp is no joke, If you're ♥♥♥♥ at it the pros know instantly. Switching gear on the fly is hard as hell.

>The combat you mentioned is still very very bare bones.
Sure it takes practice to pull off, but in the end it’s just clicking between different passive buffs and changing gear mid fight.
Which was great 16 years ago, but when literally any mmorpg that exists is more deep than that in some way, there isn’t much of a sell here.

Lol, the majority of popular modern MMOs are tab target garbage, which is hardly better than runescape, because you still just press buttons for skills. The skill animations just give the illusion that it's an action combat system to the average player.

Simple combat isn't always bad, look at Heroes of Might and Magic 3, a widely beloved and challenging game, but the actual combat gameplay is simple as ♥♥♥♥, the variety in variables make it interesting however. It's the same in Runescape where your gear and the monsters defense is what decides on how you will approach an encounter.

GW2 has a good action like combat.

And it’s not just about mmorpgs. Runescapes majority of content is solo oriented. You’re practically playing a singleplayer game with real players being around you and trading exists.
