Genuine question, no intention to offend anyone. Why do you play this?
I just can't imagine how anyone, unless playing on a computer built in from the windows XP age which can't do anything else, would decide to play this over literally any other option.

Is undying nostalgia the only reason?

If we're talking strictly from a F2P perspective, in 2021, there's so many other games that would provide far more content.
If we're talking about the full "paid subscription" experience, why would you ever consider it worth it?
Paying 10$ dollars a month to play a game that was made 15+ years ago and plays like it.
The majority of the content is the most busiest work possible to anything grindy.

There is no visual appeal (other than the initial appreciation of the classic artstyle).
there's no voice acting of any sorts to establish character.
The OST although very nostalgic for someone who has played this as a kid; is nothing special.
There is no "combat" you mouse click on a target and wait for it to die. sometimes changing passive buffs or a weapon during the fight or opting to click somewhere else on the map to run away.
The bits of content that you could consider enjoyable are locked behind a long journey of trial and error and grind.
I doubt anyone plays this for plot/story.
Although the game is an 'MMORPG', as to my knowledge, the "PARTY" mechanic is very very limited. Most content , unless designed specifically to hold more than one player, revolves around you only and other people just exist around you completing tasks for themselves in the same location.

So there's no graphical appeal. No sound appeal. No combat appeal. No story or characters to be attached to.
You have to pay money MONTHLY ( or grind even more to pay) for more content. The gameplay loop IS the grind.

I don't see how any person who just wants a new game to play would look at this ancient creation and think this would be something worthy of his time.

It may sound hypocritical as a gamer myself to use the words "waste of time" as any gaming is technically a huge waste of our time, but playing this literally feels like wasting your life away.

Asking this question is like asking what is the point in life? If it isn't to your taste that doesn't reflect on the enjoyment others get from the game.

Personally I enjoy the sense of achievement the game gives. That aside some of the late game content is actually really complex, deceptively so in fact... Not to mention endless things to do. The quests are great as well, dragon slayer 2 and song of the elves were very memorable, alongside many of the classics like underground pass, monkey madness, desert treasure etc...

If you haven't played it don't diss it is all I'm saying. It is absolutely a waste of time, as in it is the ultimate waste of time.

I'm not about to read this entire thread but there is more to a game than graphics.

Let's take Death Stranding for example, a lot of people said that was the most boring game on the planet and could not fathom why anyone would find it appealing. Then you have people (myself included) who loved the game and completed everything it had to offer.

So using the above example, people have different tastes. I agree part of it is likely nostalgia from 15-ish years ago as most new players today would likely just jump on RS3.

it's because MMO players are like Rocky Balboa in the movie Rocky 4. The long training/grinding from the cold lonely bedroom of the player. Pushing through barriers, both social and skill wise. Showcasing your talents and gaining prestige amongst the newbs. Rising like a SPIDER from the wasteland of your mind. You've done it Jim, your server famous and getting at least 4 whispers from people as soon as you log in.

Your character looks dope AF. You have titles to prove your prowess. Newbs walk past you and stop pressing W to pause their char to inspect your gear then awkwardly walk off. Your in the zone in PvP like a surfer when his mid-wave gliding his fingers along the water. REAL girls are talking to you from the guild and if your lucky in whispers, you chat to different girls trying to remain Alpha your characters reputation depends on it. After like 2 years of chatting to some girls on a daily you ask one of them for their AOL messenger handle, so you can maybe develop the relationship. They respond "I don't give me email/info out to people I don't know".

You log out and the years pass, you fill up empty bottles with urine and store them under your crusty mattress, your obese now with fungus's growing on your back. You go out maybe once a month. Your popping painkillers and drinking a 6 pack a day. All you have left is your ageing cat who's suffering from renal failure, doing diarrheas all over the place but you cba to clean it. You just lay down staring at the ceiling as your mind swims around in a psychosis. Game over man.

Ironic coming from someone who 100% games and has anime plastered all over their profile.

You hide your game times for games because while you're insult others for "wasting their life" you probably have hundreds upon hundreds of hours in these games where you are 100% completing
(unless of course you're cheating using SAM to get the achievements, which could be the real reason you hide your game time)

Really hate how every game forum has some complainer like this guy when they have 0 intentions of playing the game.

Oh also Forgot to add how I REALLY dislike gamers like you who don't care about the gameplay, only the graphics and now "new" the game is.

Guess u never played any of the best games ever made like Mother, Chrono Trigger etc...

This right here, this is what it's all about. This encapsulates the true essence of OSRS.

Buddy i think you need to chill.

Regarding the 100%ing, you should refer to a previous comment as I already answered it.

I do hide playtime, but that’s because overall game details and playtime (which i don’t care if you see) and recent activity are the same setting.
I prefer some privacy and it isn’t anyone’s business why i played today and for how long.
If i could show you my overall game library + play time without activating recent activity, i would.
And I no, I don’t use SAM, don’t understand why people would use it.

Don’t see how anime has to do with anything.
Watching 1 episode a week of Attack of Titan isn’t doesn’t invalidate my opinion and wastes far less time than Netflix bingere lol.

And how don’t i care about the gameplay? I mentioned the barebones “combat “ 3 times already.
Would you rather I mention how fun it is to cut trees just to
Burn it for a week straight?

I have played runescape as a kid, because i had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ computer and was only allowed to play free things.
I haven’t played the other things you mentioned as i only had a pc as kid.
As i got a bit older, games like the original assassins creed games, GTA SA and the likes were what i had.

What’s specifically different about rs3 that you think is the reason behind preferring that.

Rs3 is a more modern version of the game. It has a more traditional mmo combat style like WoW, or FFXIV, with skills and hotkeys to activate them, along with updated graphics. The grind in RS3 is also heavily reduced, with things like faster training methods, bonus xp, double xp weekends, and a boatload of mtx.

I usually end up recommending RS3 to people that haven't touched the Runescape games in general as it is a more newby friendly as well, though much of the community does prefer OSRS. There is a whole history behind the split of the two games if you are interested enough to look it up.

I love how you say this while you're demanding to know why people play Runescape

BIG hypocrite.
