Tips for the first boss?

heya guys,

Really enjoying this game so far, but i'm hard stuck on this boss (first main boss, not the first one that's su pposed to kill you), the one with a top hat.
Does anyone have any tips? I can consistently get him to low blue bar and low hp and then can't get past that (i'm guessing there's a phase 2 too lol).
Any tips?
What's been tripping me up a LOT is I can't dodge the attacks properly (i.e. there are a few moves that come out too quickly to dodge) and they deal a lot of damage, so i should be deflecting them right? I tried deflecting which is much better than only dodging, but I find myself spamming deflect since the attacks are so fast.

I should add: my damage feels good (even though i lose some damage cuz i forget to claw or attack sometimes), but my hp feels measly (i think i have 6 hp) and i feel like i have no heals (4).
Edit number 2: deflects are doing me no good - i'm taking like half my hp in damage through my deflects. I feel like this isn't for me, my reflexes aren't fast enough.

Edit: Finally got him. if anyone else is in the same boat reading this and wants to know what I did (since I suck and finally beat him), I upgraded my 'reckless deflect' skill to the max (which helped a good bit) and just spammed deflect :)

I'm still getting my butt kicked with reckless deflect but I'll take another go after some sleep, maybe I'm too frustrated to try again lol.

update: oh so apparently my mistake was still trying to time my deflects. This time around I just spammed it before he attacked all the way until he was done attacking and yeah it worked! not 100% affective but enough that I could survive the fight. I never managed to avoid his big red ultimate attack, I assume I just need to start running away sooner, but I had enough health to face tank it this time around and finish him off :)

Tips :

* Upgrade your deflect skill, as said above (This is the only fight you will really need it in).

* Try to get the dagger/knife as a permanent plague weapon, it drains his green health really fast and does not cost much energy. So slam him with your sword then use the dagger to get him very much hurt.

*STAY CLOSE, otherwise there is a possibility he might do a critical attack.

Beat the game, really was a piece of cake after that boss
apart from having to respec for the hanging queen to outdamage her heals, no fight took more than 2 or 3 times any more, even got the final boss on my first try. Talk about throwing you in the deep end!
