[SOLVED] Game does not load, attempted on 2 fresh win10 eng installs
Samurai Shodown is broken. I have 2 fresh install windows 10 systems with the latest win10 updates, nVidia, mobo, DX, etc drivers. I also have all the .net packages if that matters.

Win10 -64 bit build 19043
English only, no double byte characters or spaces in the path for user folder or game
Z590 Aorus Elite latest bios f3d
i5-11400 with no OC
32GB Ram

When pressing the "Play" button, it shows the game processing in steam, then stops and goes back to "Play" being in green. There is no visible attempt at the game to form a window.

Pressing the Samsho exe files in the steam common apps folders, similarly does nothing.

This is the first time I've attempted to load Samurai Shodown and have never gotten it to work, so fresh install may be broken for this game. Hopefully the devs see this and fix it.

Thanks for your comment.
I also tried the same (DirectX reinstall, Visual C++ 2019Redist install, .Net 3.5 reinstall and reboot) but Samurai Shodown didn't launch.

However, since this seemed "Unreal Engine 4 common problem" (or Intel chip's common problem with Unreal Engine 4?... whatever), I tried adding new environment variable named "OPENSSL_ia32cap" with the value "~0x20000000".
After adding (and reboot), Samurai Shodown launched perfectly.

BTW, my 2 attempts to load were on separate PC hardware, but I built them the same. I will probably try a 3rd pc with different spec as well.

Steam verified the files for samurai shodown on both pcs and that did not help. If that provides any additional help/info.

Hi,

We will move this to the technical support sub-forum.

Could you please provide us with your DxDiag file?

Hello, thanks for responding, I've been trying more things to troubleshoot this all day and would be happy to share my DXDIAG file. I will attach it below.

Additional testing I did today:
- Used Windows "Reset" to refresh the install (removes all programs and resets windows while keeping user files), did not work
- Reinstalled Steam and reinstalled & reverified SS files, still did not help
- Tested it on my third gaming PC (different hw/sw) and it loaded. Strange, because this was a fresh install too and set up the same way as the other 2 pcs, just with different hardware (eg. 2080 vs 1080 and later supported drivers I think).
- Attempted to bring over Local appdata settings from PC3 to PC1 and PC2 to see if that'd help, it didn't.

Getting kind of desperate and looked at GCW for a modified exe to boot, and decided against it. I paid quite a bit for the full edition of the game and would love to play it!

One more thing, when I reset my Windows10 install, I did note that steam went through first time setup appropriately and installed DX and .net 3.5. It was after that the game crashes out consistently, so it doesn't appear to me to be a dependency problem. Other games using DX and .net 3.5 work (and I have about 200 installed from Steam that are working).

Hello Mithrax,

We had a look but it seems that your PCs might be missing some applications needed to play the game.

You mentioned that you verified the integrity of the game files on Steam, so please try installing the following applications:

- DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109

- Visual C++ 2019Redist (Microsoft)
https://support.microsoft.com/ja-jp/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

Regarding the .Net 3.5, could you try to go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, click on "Turn Windows features on or off" on the left, then select the .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) check box, and check it? Press OK and reboot if prompted.

Hello psyche1974,

Thanks a lot for the DxDiag file, we will have a look and let you know if we find any issues.
Just in case, could you check my reply to Mithrax above and see if this fixes your problem?

Hi again, thank you for the response once again and assistance.

Steps taken:
I reinstalled DirectX from the link you provided, as well as installed the Visual C++ 2019Redist from here (x64: vc_redist.x64.exe)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads-2647da03-1eea-4433-9aff-95f26a218cc0

...since the above link is in japanese.

I then went to "Turn Windows features on or off" (.net 3.5 was checked) and unchecked 3.5 and clicked "apply" then checked 3.5 and clicked "apply" and it appears to have reinstalled.

I then rebooted and attempted to launch Samurai Shodown and it resulted in the same crash :winter2019sadsnowman:

Hi Mithrax,

Thanks for your reply, I will report it to our studio again, and see if there is any solution.

Just in case, is there any error message or additional information that you can provide? I know you have provided plenty of information already but there might be something we are missing.

Best,

Hi psyche1974,

Thanks for the information. We will have a look at this UE4 issue, and I passed Intel's official documentation to our developers.

Hello again, unfortunately there is no error (nothing like an unhandled exception or stack trace) when it crashes. No window appears. It's very odd behavior. If there is an Unreal Engine crash log located somewhere I'd be happy to provide it to you if you know the location though.

Thanks again for the continued assistance on this issue! I greatly appreciate it.

I do have a brand new intel 11400 cpu that's around 3 months old so I will also try Psyche1974's approach and report back!
