The disappointment for me mainly came from the very limited outfit choices for the created warriors (you have to buy recycled outfits from earlier games that kinda clash with the game's aesthetic) and the poverty/repetition of events and scenarios (you just get a 30s cutscene once per campaign to tell you you're a good/bad person and the rest is mainly capturing/befriending/marrying officers).
So I would say that no, it is not significantly better than 8 Empires, only slightly so, and it has a bunch of problems on its own. I expected it to get meaningful content down the line like they did with Vanilla, but it didn't happen. If you're interested, I think you should wait until it drops at around 25$.
Otherwise no you got a massive downgrade cant even set up own scenario or change base game character costumes or be a free officer with purpose (may as well been 100% removed it as it litteraly just reduces what you can do and not a thing more).
The combat consist of a 4 hit combo or any one of those four hits chained into a single charge attack. Limited. You can counter with the charge button - Use special attacks with the trigger + one of four buttons - The charge trigger attack can be charged - There's a combo when the opponent is down for certain fighting styles, like Lu bu's for instance. You can also chain the 4 hit combo - into a charge attack - back into another 4 hit combo - rinse repeat for however long. Certain fighting styles have an air combo, like Zhou Tai's, so you can do a trigger charge to knock them airborne - regular attack that will auto attack in the air - follow with a charge - another trigger charge to knock airborne - rinse repeat for however long.
It's okay but limited on combos. Previous DW games were better on the combo note. There are no raids - there are no assassinations - vagrant officer is heavily restricted.
What the game does do better than the other Empire games, aside from the visuals, is the handling of the time limit. The open world portion is not time limited, so you can explore for however long you want or if limited, 30 full days. Empires time progresses by a month with a 50 years time limit. So that's 12 rounds per year; plenty of time to get things done and still have plenty of time to spare. There's also the interaction with hero's and spouses that imo, is better than other Empires games; mainly because there's more options and more interactions that they randomly initiate with you.
Morale determines how much damage you do to an enemy and how much the enemy does to you.
On normal difficulty it is just mixing heavy and light attacks.
On higher difficulties it is holding block then Parrying each time to do more damage.
The main combat is 5 stages.
1. Activating your strategic ability (Only available if you have the ability to. Success means morale go up and failure means a lower morale)
2. Capturing bases to defend/attack (opening a gate).
3. Defending against the enemies strategy (failure makes your morale go down)
4. At a random point in battle a random event occurs usually an assault team/archers/bannerman do a scripted event).
5. Morale goes higher for your team and then you start capturing their main base.
Every fight unfortunately has that strategy.
Dynasty Warriors 9 was a better game than this empire variant.
made total war three kingdoms) i like warrior style combat better but strategies and tactics found in their game are too basic and one dimentional
All that's missing from DW9E is the options from DW8E, and maybe some activities in the open world portion. Definitely not gonna happen though, as Koei has pretty much left this game after the 2022 patch. Unfortunately it's a take it or leave it.
edit:
I've put in about 73 hours with this game, so I do find it to be entertaining, but it could've been way better.
