Empires often fixes what bad their parent DW had. For example, DW6 Empires is waaaay better than DW6, fixing the combat, primarely getting rid of renbu system. This is why I've always been a fan of Empires more so than normal DW...
Just play the free trial of 9, you can unlock 3 characters to play through the story as. If you can stomach that, then Empires will be just fine for you. It ain't one of those "the wait was worth it" kinda games. I hate to use this example but it's Kingdom Hearts 3. It's mostly a luke warm experience built up over a long period of waiting since 8 Empires.
The battle format is subjectively the best it's been to date at the cost of the map design and stratagems. Anyway you can read the steam reviews for this game of anyone who replies to this thread including mine. It's 2am and idk why I'm here.
Is it any better then DW9? No, why would it? It's Empires. It's not meant to be Dynasty Warriors 10.
If you like the combat, you'll like this game. The domestic side is busy but simplistic, everything has a purpose. The AI on Hard/Chaos is pretty good, the cards are not as dynamic as 8E but they have a lot of things for it that are fun and useful.
I'm holding off on reviewing the game until it's fully translated because I want to make sure I am actually understanding everything that is going on/what the cards do/titles, etcera. But right now I can definitely recommend it from a gameplay function at least, but again, that hinges entirely on if you like the 9 combat (which I do).
The CAW is lackluster from a clothing standpoint but everything else is really good in my opinion.
Gameplay wise though I think it’s very fun, it doesn’t have as many customization options as DW8E like troop editor or as many clothes or even caw musous but the trade off is the officer interaction is much higher(such as a real family system) and the strategy/empires play is more important and on hard/chaos even actually difficult to stay afloat because the AI is actually better there
Actually i must disagree. To me it's thousands of times better than DW9. At least you don't get over leveled super fast. I just wanted a harder difficulty option.
No, there have been no updates in 9 Empires since it was released, they are either working on it for consoles, or fixing stuff up along with the other languages, and are more likely to update it during the English release date of February, meaning, this should be treated more as an Early Access than a full fledged game (Although it is, in Japanese).
This means it's unpolished in various levels, but not unplayable.
If you can deal with the language barrier (there is a semi-english translation available) and the lack of polish, the game itself is exactly what we could describe as "Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires", for better or worse.
It's likely to get better with time (but not any time soon), just, it's not better than DW7 Empires, but DW9E is closer to 7 Empires in influence than 8 Empires.
Oh man I actually forgot about this, I played LianShi in DW9 for like three chapters straight and she was like level 70 all because of the daily EXP thing they were doing, it was insane how easy it made the game.
Really, it's not a bad entry to the Empire series. It's just attached to the DW9 engine, and gets both the stigma from the name and all the problems that come with that engine(poor draw distance, asset pop-in/bugs, etc).
I'd do what others have suggested: Try the DW9 trial first. If you like the combat and you also like Empires games, you'll probably like DW9E.
Try to get the rams or ladders to the castle when trying to break through it, and once it's done, invade it and kill everyone.
I heard that there was an update that blocked you from climbing on these castles (like how it works in Empires), so you can't cheese it anymore, but I have never tested it, since it was always my pleasure to fight like being in an army and breaking in properly.
It also has the Archer units with similar functionality as Empires, and another unit that hasn't appeared yet in Empires, the Engineers, that build the ladders and rams. It however doesn't have the closed battlefield from Empires, meaning that Officers are spread thin all around the castle, while in Empires, due to the restricted environment, they are always somewhere reachable.
Levels don't mean much from what I see in this game, even on higher difficulties... unless you were like 10 levels lower I guess.
