First Battle of Kiev

Hi folks.

I've managed to complete first kiev once, more by good luck, but I only recovered so few units that I was pretty much crippled for the rest of the game. I have repeatedly restarted it to try to get a better position for the next scenarios; Moscow etc, and also as I am not satisfied that I have actually worked out how to complete the First Kiev scenario and I'm looking for advice.

Up until this point I have worked for Gold or perfect completions and lost few units so my CPs and Prestige should be decent.

I have tried all kinds of unit formations: Air heavy, Arty+AA, Massed tanks, massed infantry. dfifferent routes (e.g. direct to exit and gradual up the river supported by the gunb boats) but I get crushed all the time.

Not happy, please advise.

I am playing on challenging level which is balanced: AI and player at 100%.

it is difficult, I only manged to get to the curve in the river before running out of fuel+ammo, and this was with 150% prestige. At 100% it was impossible to break out, which I guess was what historically happened when the soviets lost some 700,000 soldiers around Kiev. But for the game that is not recoverable from. I think I will just lower the enemy strength for this mission.
