Not worth upgrading till later?
I'm still very early in the game. I can only assume that it's not worth upgrading anything till way later because I'm constantly finding better weapons and armor. There seems to be a ton of loot in the game and it's kind of expensive to upgrade weapons. But armor seems pretty cheap to upgrade. Even still, doesn't seem worth it at all right now.

I'm also guessing that it's generally better to disassemble weapons and armor. I have so much loot I just want to disassemble just about everything that I'm not using.

Disassemble everything that doesn't have a gold stats effect (in the 4 bottom line). Keep all items that have gold stats for transfer to your best gear later.
Sell all accessories that doesn't have bonus set effect (in the first line).

Once you unlocked the Ally Mission after finish story. Grinding on this mode in coop. Try to help each other. It will unlock another bosses. I try it as soon as I finish story even I can't fight them but another players will help you.
This mode give you a tons of level and money and gears with Masterwork rarity.

Wait until you get level 100 gears, find the best one you prefer for bonus effect. Then start upgrade it to level 110, transfer the gold bonus effect to the best gear.

Tips. Find the item named "Handpicked Cologne" it will reduce bonus set required -1 item.
I don't remember how to get it but YouTube can help.

These are all great tips. Thanks.
I found an armour with a set bonus I like, which also does not set my eyes ablaze, and I will be upgrading it till kingdom come.

You can transmog any armor in the long house.
"Handpicked Cologne" is from Ryoma (last and final Bond Mission iirc) - the Yasakani Magatama of RotRonin. This allows you to combine 4 sets within your 8 slots for their 2-bonuses (3er are mostly useless anyway)

Save yourself some Equip with good bonuses (+MartialArt Attack, Counterspark Stuf, etc.) for transfering perks and try to find some balance between selling and disassembling because youll need mats and money for upgrading.

If you really like this game theres no need to hold back with upgrading. Blacksmith away...

Transfering perks ("bonding") is another story though. Bond jewels are somewhat harder to come by if you don't coop alot. And in the highest difficulty(Midnight) you can transfer/overwrite every slot per item - not just one - so you'll probably want to save up on them.

That last bit is very good to hear as I was scared we would only be able to rewrite one slot for the entire game.

One question, though as a solo player where would you get bond jewels and are they a limited resource?
The "Black Marketeer" outside your longhouse in Yokohama sells bond jewels for 10 silver.
There was one in Edo iirc - can't remeber where exactly...

You can also try an old method of "farming" (borderline exploit-ish):
Find one enemy in a unruly area who drops a bond jewel; kill him and loot the jewel, die and repeat the process.
Mind you that worked over a year ago so it is probably patched/fixed.

There was also a short Ally-Mission in the mid 50s (level54? 55?) that is not very difficult that people used to run.

Second farming method was a lvl 70 (Thugs: Honnoji) where you would kill the first 2 enemys and return to banner and repeat . Don't know if it still works nowadays.

So in conclusion i'd say they are somewhat limited as they are not THAT easy to obtain. Just don't spend them all over the place :P
In nioh, once you hit endgame a new rarity tier above gold gets added to the pool. I dont know if thats how it works in this game, I'm not there yet. But as usual, the cost of upgrading is too high for me to actually mess with it which is a shame cause I do love the idea of messing with swords and moving skills around to get the perfect mix. But the devs seem to prefer you deal in random loot instead

Yes in "Midnight" (the diff. after "Twilight") another rarity (red color), sets and a skilltree gets added. And - as written before - you can change/inherit/overwrite every perk-slot on equip and not just one. Upgrading is still somewhat expensive.
