Not worth upgrading till later?
I'm still very early in the game. I can only assume that it's not worth upgrading anything till way later because I'm constantly finding better weapons and armor. There seems to be a ton of loot in the game and it's kind of expensive to upgrade weapons. But armor seems pretty cheap to upgrade. Even still, doesn't seem worth it at all right now.

I'm also guessing that it's generally better to disassemble weapons and armor. I have so much loot I just want to disassemble just about everything that I'm not using.

You can farm infinite upgrade materials using the cats and the dogs. The systems provide tons of assets every hour, so you can sell/disassemble for free basically.

Upgrade away, and then some more.

Your focus should be on the bonds and stats, upgrades do not increase custom stats, so you'll have to save equipment with good stats to swap them once you find equipment with slots, or master equipment. So if you get a +10% stat in a weapon/equipment, better hold on to it for later to swap that stat to your desired equipment.

Been upgrading my weapon because it is gold rarity and has a set bonus on it.
Not worth it to waste resources on something you can replace pretty quickly. Save resources for later, as is the rule of all team ninja games.
Thanks for the input, everyone. This helps a lot.

I personally have not upgraded a single time, but once I hit the endgame difficulty that is when I believe it will be much more useful.
I've upgraded some stuff but the damage and level increase seems trivial given how much they cost. I'd say it is a trap to filter out the newbies, incentivize them to waste money and materials and have non left when they actually might need it.
So yeah do not upgrade.

I just sell low tier loot and scrap higher tier loot. Like totally random. I'll just highlight about half and sell. Highlight half and scrap.
Build up resources. Eventually when I see stats I want with a decent percentage I'll stick it in storage. But just ignore the majority of the system and swap to whatever is highest stats and most useful stats until end game where I bother to engage the upgrades.

I just set everything below a certain rarity to auto scrap whenever I use a checkpoint.

From my experience, if you're planning to do everything—side missions, bond quests, map completions, there is no need to upgrading at all, you will get a better one, weapons or armors from the rewards.

I have hundreds of those materials and nearly 700K worth of gold sitting in my inventory. :asciiterror:

Thanks for all of the replies/posts! Lots of useful information in here.

Yeah I've been getting some incredible equipment just from running into random people out on the roads. The random encounters that have those banner looking symbols over the NPC. Not to mention the stuff I get simply going along with the story so far.

Good point.

You don't need to bother with upgrading until you get red weapons (midnight difficulty, post game), the game throws gear at you hand over fist so upgrading is useless until you reach that point. Always disassemble equipment anything below red, lock the things you want to use.

For context, I'm level 75 and have yet to upgrade any equipment.

I never upgrade my gear until level 100.
There is no point to upgrade early.
After you finish story and unlock the hardest mode, it'd take few hour to get from level 50 to 100 by grinding coop bosses fight. You'll get best gear from that coop bosses fight too.

Items on you including weapon stances scale based on attributes like str, dex, cha, int. These matter a lot in the beginning levels.
