have you ever heard of kengo?
the first time i played sekiro i was so fascinated by the combat. it was the only game like that i have ever played up to that point.

because i enjoyed it so much, i wanted to find other games that were the same. of course i found wo long at some point, and wolong was awesome. but before wolong, i found kengo.

kengo is a very old game but an incredible samurai dueling game. very traditional too, very quiet, very.... cozy? in a way? incredibly immersive, for me, at least.

so, if you guys enjoy the fact that this game has combat styles and a parry system, i encourage you to try kengo. it's a hidden gem, and a treasure for samurai duel fans.

not only this game took certain things from kengo, but ghost of tsushima took some ideas from that game as well. i think that game is where it all started, so to me it's such an important piece in the history of games like this (aside from bushido blade of course). just try it and you'll see.

u can emulate it on pc using an emulator, that's all i'm going to say.

and u can even play the 3rd game in the series by using a screen translator called translumo (find it on github).

The semi official sequel to Kengo, "Sword of the Samurai", is even more similar with an incredible in depth combat style customization system

I think it released under the name Kengo 2 in certain countries (both PS2 games)

Rise of the Ronin is an excellent game at its core, that's held back by low production value

For people who enjoy it because they can look past dated aspects, these two games are definitely great recommendations

Yea i'm personally not including the third game because they went full arcade gameplay with it

I'm sure there are other fans, it's just that we're getting older

It's like glazing over Ring of Red from PSX2 era, seems like nobody remember those games, i wish some publisher would invest in remakes but that's most likely way too niche to ever happen
I'll see your Kengo and raise you the very first Japanese swordfighting video game I can think of: https://youtu.be/b9hvyd0wKig?t=1709

Primitive, but extremely immersive samurai-life simulator for a game made in 1989.

no no no no, u are mistaken

that's the 4th game you are talking about. the one on the xbox.

the 3rd game is kengou 3. it never released in english. it's only in japanese, so that's why i suggested using translumo to translate the japanese into english. it works amazingly well, and so i was able to play something i could've never before.

that's some hardcore stuff right there, pixels and everything. reminds me of budokan the martial spirit.

Another similar game also set in the Bakumatsu period is Way of the Samurai 4, with a pretty complex combat system and a branching storyline/multiple endings. Way of the Samurai 3 is also on Steam but set in the Sengoku period.

Kengo is pretty cool, but controls like garbage
Genji is cool too, but it's way too simplistic
Samurai Cowboy is super super super cool

There's also "the legend of the 7" which is stories of the most famous samurai, like musashi, but it also controls very rigid
