Flash Attack not giving back ki?
I just got the 3rd upgrade for flash attack on the strength tree because I've been struggling to keep my Ki up during combos. I thought If ended a combo with a flash attack it would fill my ki back up and leave me with some to at least block but I don't see my ki bar fill up even a little. As opposed to using my blade flash which does increase my ki, flash attack does nothing except extend my combo and leave me open to attack, especially against bosses.

I know I'm doing it right because I am switching weapons in my combo. Maybe I'm the one that's wrong and it doesn't actually give you ki but the description does mention ki recovery.

pretty sure flash attack switches stance to continue the combo, not swapping weapon.
As for getting ki back, i honestly havent really been using the skill so idk

You're thinking Violent Gale. Flash Attack is the weapon swap one.
No, the OP is correct. For the record:

Flash Attack: Swaps between your primary and secondary weapon
Violent Gale: Swaps between the stances of your equipped weapon

Lol, I'm trying to test this stuff out, but it's hard because swapping stances in the game tends to set off a Blade Flash which DOES replenish a small amount of Ki. So I'm not going to bother with Violent Gale since that's only really useful when facing multiple enemies who have different weaknesses. If you're facing a boss you're unlikely to be swapping stances unless you swap your weapons because the enemies are usually only weak to one particular type of stance.

Flash Attack DOES appear to replenish a small amount of Ki. I just tested it in sparring mode, but it's such an tiny increment. It's not really going to help you out as much as you're thinking. It still useful especially when facing bosses (who seem to have a stupid amount of Ki) in the sparring mode, but it's not something you can depend on.

My advice is to use Blade Flash to remove blood from your weapon, and to pull back without holding the block button when the enemies stop attacking to allow your Ki bar to start refilling, and then go in when it's replenished a decent amount. The enemies do give you time to breathe and it's when those moments happen that you need to pull back and let your Ki replenish instead of going all in.

Yeah, I agree here. That is my main problem with the combat system in game - the elements of it fight against each other and are not fluid. Either due to the weakness system, or because bosses are just too aggressive, forcing you to break combos before you can even fully execute one.

A shame really, dunno why it ended up likle this. While yes, the combat is fun, I can't bring myself to use any of the swapping mechanics because they simply make no sense.

You’re both looking at the swap mechanics the wrong way

You really only need to counterspark in the advantaged stance to get the maximum panic benefit, so the most retaliation time

The swap stuff allows you to combo better and faster outside of that, since Violent Gale and Flash attack animations can be canceled with martial arts, and chaining arts this way is much faster than trying to use the 4 within a style back to back, not to mention the actual attack from VG/FA even if you don’t cancel the animation extends the panic window slightly, as well as gives you forward momentum which can help with spacing for you next art

I have to practice this but yea you're right. You can link either a normal or martial art into blade flash and cancel very early into another normal, MA or VG. You have to get used to the timing, specially since various styles have different active frame durations and you can't simply buffer the blade flash, you have to link it at the end.

So that answers my original question too. The proper way to get ki back is from a blade flash with a decent amount of blood. VG's and FA are combo extenders with very little ki recovery unless you use passive effects that increase the amount.

So I'm guessing the proper route is something like normal attack, BF xx VG xx MA, BF. normal attack that you can blade flash, cancel into gale into martial art, back into blade flash to recover ki.

Something like that. When you get to Midnight and unlock the Ferocious Tiger bonus too this becomes even easier as with it Flash attacks will automatically bladeflash, so you can just weapon swap through your combos and maintain Ki better
