tbh wishing this game were purely mission-based
The actual meat of the game is very fun (i.e. the combat) but damn I'm starting to burn out with doing anything in the open world in act 2. It's pretty much ubisoft-coded where it's mechanically very bland - do chores in a region for a reward. There's pretty much nothing in said open world to actually explore and do that feels unique (so far at least, I'm sure there's a few things at some point at least). I don't mind doing public orders and fugitive hunts but I don't really like anything else.

Playing RotR is giving me the urge to play through nioh 2 for the billionth time if nothing else lol., or maybe SoP as I haven't played that one to death yet. Again, combat is really fun, think the game would be 5x better with the usual mission structure though

if you want another game to play i recommend "The First Berserker Khazan", it has a major nioh influence on it, you will surely love it.

I'm looking to play it after finishing RotR.

I prefer mission-based structure but RotR open world is fine for me. It's just enough balanced (size/length) to not be utterly tiresome like most of the other open world for me.
I do like how fast can travel through the open world. I decided to give ACS a chance but the open world is so cluttered, while this game is fairy bare. Making it easier to travel, without being blinded by 1000s trees in my face like ACS. Although the open world in this game is kind of boring.
I don't like I can't just freely grind battles. Its more or less clear this area then move on to the next. Taking pics, finding cats getting into a couple of battles then rinse and repeat.
There are ways but don't really care for it.
So part of me kind of agrees, having structure similar to Wo long or Nioh 2.
Would have been better then what they had.
Concept of a open world is a great idea but just really isn't utilized well in this game.

Khazan has less charm than RotR and not has much variety in combat style but the combat design and the bosses are S Tier.

I love both games.

Dunno, I think the artstyle is incredible and really dig the main progagonist being the manliest anime man in history.

Apart from Jack from Stranger of Paradise, of course.

Yeah, the game doesn't actually look bad. Some of the locales actually look quite nice. I'm just left wishing that there was either more variety with open world content or they just cut a lot of that fluff out.

In terms of combat-gameplay, I would also prefer a purely mission-based game principle as an open world always has lengths where nothing happens. But I think in this game the open world contributes a lot to the story and it's also better in terms of gameplay because the player has more freedom when choosing activities.
However, I'm not a fan of this marker system, as it gets in the way of the actual benefit of an open world, which is exploration.
It would have been better to use fewer markers and instead rely more on the player's urge to explore. Cats would not have to be displayed and crates could be hidden in prominent places or fugitives could be tracked down using a wanted description. The world also lacks some dynamism, which could have been achieved by re-spawning bandit camps. A reputation system similar to the clan wars in Nioh2 could have been added. But that's the way it is and despite all the criticism, the game is still good and a lot of fun.
Felt the same with Ghost and FF7 Rebirth, achievements and checklist UI design ruined open world/hub world games. Probably not an issue for people who are new to such design but as someone that has already beaten the Arkham series, Skyrim. Witcher 3, numerous AC games, numerous Far Cry games, RDR2 etc, it gets stale extremely quickly. It's just not as fun or enjoyable as old open world, hub world, or overworld map games like Gothic 1&2, Morrowind, Deus Ex, og FF7, 8, 9, Shenmue, etc, and feels more like MMORPG *yawn* design but stuffed into singleplayer games.

Well... if the missions WERE BIG then maybe it would be better yes. The last thing I want is invisible walls or "return to mission area". I like playing stealthy and if the game forces me down a certain path then I have to get creative or just throw my hands up and say F*** it. Ram through .
