Yes, you can often see the opinion on the Internet that Rise of The Ronin is a spiritual successor to Way of the Samurai. The difference with Rise of The Ronin is that it is a much longer game. The combat system in Rise of The Ronin is very interesting and complex, this is one of the most important advantages of this game!

Thanks a lot for this! Cant wait to give the game a try!
It doesn't have the same sort of NPC scheduling/multiple branching paths thing as Way of the Samurai since the combat really is the primary focus, but it's the only game I've played that gives me the same vibes. Wouldn't be surprised if WotS was an influence on Ronin's development.
From the gameplay Ive seen, I think its gameplay is close to a mixture of Ghost of tsushima meets Tenchu....I'm curious how open ended the story will be.
Not really tbh, it's a similar setting to WotS4 but the combat is most similar to Nioh/2 and it's on a much grander scale with a pretty big open world over 3 maps.

It doesn't have the sort of time management/multiple short playthroughs setup either. It's a meaty story driven affair with multiple paths.

The story mostly sticks to the historical outcomes but you can choose which side to fight for and there are some surprises in there depending on which path you take.

It's not the same in the slightest, but WoS is 20 years old and did not age well. Rotr is the only choice for a feudal japan sandbox.

This game has nothing to do with Way of the Samurai in any respect. The tone is different, the time period is different, the story is different, the combat is different.

I came here literally after watching to trailer to discuss how this is the case. While it's not the same devs, it seems to be a spiritual successor to the series as far as mechanics and choices go.
Thanks for sharing that video, I can't believe how much this game is like Tenchu with Nioh fighting mixed in. I loved the Tenchu series so much back in the day, it's not my preferred style these days but I'll for sure get this one when it's on sale. Definitely doesn't seem like WotS, I miss those games too, I loved unlocking all the combos for the various weapons in those games
