It's an autobattler rogue-like, it's enjoyable but it is a "play it on a side monitor while watching a movie/youtube" game

so up to you, it's enjoyable is all I can say, won't blow you away or anything.
Also was wondering if it has clans other than Crab Clan. Scorpion clan here. I mean look at my profile picture lol.

Honestly not entirely sure I want to say you play only as crab clan because you choose a character of crab clan and that so far hasn't changed so far.

Truthfully I wasn't really paying attention to the notes and story part, I mean until I saw your post I didn't realize the game was based on anything, just thought it was a cool looking indie game.

Also, was notably a D&D 3rd edition expansion way back when.

Totally forgot about it until seeing the game pop up on Steam. Went and flipped through my old rulebook, and was actually kind a mind-blown that the main characters from the game have been prominent characters since apparently forever.

That said, yeah, only Crab Clan, as far as I know. I only played through the demo though. On the Steam forums, the devs have shown some interest in maybe adding content related to other clans down the line when people have asked, but doesn't sound like there's anything concrete.

L5R with the world of Rokugan has nothing to do with the old DnD japan setup (nor even the newer that is still on kickstarter). It has a very deep and complete world background with a setup that is miles away from DnD.
25 years ago, i played all the 1st edition campaign on TT, and it's an amazing original creation.

Well no, the 2001 Oriental Adventures expansion for D&D 3rd edition, by James Wyatt, uses Rokugan as a campaign setting. It is not the same as the original L5R TTRPG, but rather a D20 expansion that adds Rokugan as an official campaign setting for D&D 3rd edition.

You may be confusing the 1985 Oriental Adventures expansion for AD&D, which featured the Kara-Tur campaign setting, with the 3rd edition expansion, which uses Rokugan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriental_Adventures#Dungeons_&_Dragons_3rd_edition
The featured campaign setting of this edition is Rokugan, a campaign setting originally created for the game Legend of the Five Rings.

This is the blurb from the back of the book:
Oriental Adventures introduces the infinite worlds of fantastic Asia to the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game. In these pages, you'll find:
  • 5 new races, including hengeyokai, nezumi, and spirit folk
  • 5 new classes, including the samurai, the shugenja, and the wu jen
  • Over 25 new prestige classes, including the ninja, the tattooed monk, and the yakuza
  • 100 new spells
  • 75 new monsters
  • A complete campaign setting: Rokugan, the world of the Legend of the Five Rings trading card game
To use this supplement, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player's Handbook, the DUNGEON MASTER's Guide, and the Monster Manual. A player needs only the Player's Handbook.

Also, this was a D20 companion book:
https://l5r.fandom.com/wiki/Creatures_of_Rokugan
The name is kind of a dead giveaway, as far as the setting is concerned.

I literally hope at least once a year that owlcat will eventually make a L5R rpg, like they did for pathfinder and rogue trader. We can always dream.
d20 l5R was trash. The original system was so much better and l5r is once again owned by a non d20 company. It's changed hands a bit since AEG.
