I'll just say that Grethe played basically no role in my first game at all.
Because the Witch Cops murdered her.
Exactly what happened to me. seems that's the only real relationship choice I can find (which i came to like them a lot when it was all said and done but) Definitely had my eyes on another at first.
Interesting, I think as others said above its because I chose the relationship route that it sorta just happened without my say so for the most part since Grethe was still around. Cool to know that is a option as well though!
What I found really odd about how that plays out though is that when you’re en route to the election vote and talking to Abramar about how you’ll end up hating him once he takes his payment, he says something that implies that you shouldn’t assume Grethe will be the one to die and that it could be someone else. It made sense to me since Grethe and Fortuna barely know each other still. I actually thought Patrice would make more sense and be far more painful for Fortuna. But then when it comes time to collect Abramar goes on and takes Grethe’s life and Fortuna is very upset by it. I don’t know, it just felt very bizarre to me because I felt like we really didn’t see much of them as a couple together and I had a hard time believing she was really Fortuna’s greatest love. And especially because like 10 minutes before this Grethe came into the election and betrayed Fortuna by exposing to everyone that she had also summoned a behemoth and essentially tried to undercut the entire election campaign she had been actively helping us with! Maybe it was just because of the water magic? It was just weird because I felt like the game does a great job of establishing Fortuna’s relationships with Patrice, Dahlia, and Jasmine and really made me care about all three of them but the same didn’t really happen with Grethe. Their relationship fet really underdeveloped.
I am curious if you pick the romance pact if Grethe *can't* die before the water seal is released, if there's a backup for her, or if Abramar just reneges on a part of the deal.
Maybe I need to play again while giving Abramar every indication I want him for his body??? Will report back if a combination of that and aphrodisiac peppers gets me anywhere... 🔍🧐
Honestly, I assumed there would be multiple potential love interests, up to and including Abramar. That's why I chose Romance for my Water seal in the first place. I wanted to clue the game in that I was interested in that! But alas, only Grethe has the privilege of "becoming one" with a Behemoth. ):
In my playthrough, I predicted Thea would kill a witch, but had Romance for my water seal, and the witch in question was an unnamed NPC. If I recall correctly, it was during the Jade Monk conflict. So I guess the story won't let Grethe die if she's your soulmate.
Though I guess technically that would be a quick and dirty way to pay the Fire seal in advance, if it were possible...
i do feel like the romance lacks the proverbial taking out to dinner first. kind of needs to be a scene where you go on a date and flirt and whether or not you're together depends on how that goes. was kind of weird how excessively u-haul lesbian the whole thing was.
