Struggling to start waves

I'm on mission 4 and the biggest issue I have is that waves take forever to start. Most of the times I can't find any treasure chests, shooting a couple animals doesn't kick off the wave either. This ends up with me swimming around for a long time with no action and I can't help but feel like I'm doing something wrong.

For mission 4 I'm at the point now where I explore up to half an air tank away from the resupply then have to turn back around in order to fill up. I can't really explore much more. Please help, I love the underwater feel but want to experience the game part.

Treasure chests show up on your compass. It took me quite a while to notice that.

It seems like I'm swimming around for 10-20 minutes with no action and then I just get bored and turn off the game.
