The way to the lair is rather siimple and fair, but BEWARE when the alert sound starts. Very few time to restock and very view place to fight the big one and the smaller enemies.
I would appreciate, the devs would optionally buff that scene. I.e., after 5 tries or so, make it optional to lower the difficulty. And/or make more respawn points. It's annoying to travel all the way to the lair, again, again AND AGAIN.
You don't have to start from the beginning to get all upgrades. After a specific update, you are able to start from the last level with all upgrades avaiable. Don't overwrite your save! You have to choose new game. It's not the so called NG+, that as not avaiable until you finished the game. It's confusing, I know.
From a new game you can choose to start after finished levels. Before the last level, you get all upgrades avaiable and enough money to buy them all. You don't have to earn them again, UNLESS you overwrote your save. Its's a little weird and hard to explain, but it works that way.
