And what about cameo if not enemy of greater sizes like Megalodon, PredatorX and Livyatan-Melvillei?
There was also a game called "Shark! Hunting The Great White" from my childhood and its night level set in pitch black dark ocean floor with only light coming from a submarine still gets into my nightmares.
A a huge sunk Freighter or a luxury Passenger Liner like Titanic, where you can dwell inside like a whole new level and encounter ghosts, maybe a small side story like Harrison Okene whom survived 3 days in a sunken ship. It would make quite a fright to suddenly encounter a survivor down there (As it literally did to the rescue diver, scared the sh**t out of him lol).
And finally I guess, Atlantis. It would make an awesome setting with its own unique drowned alienish enemies.

I'll second the idea for a rare siren/mermaid that's friendly that leads you to a secret treasure stash, but maybe only spawns during the end wave attacks to balance the challenge.
I'd also like to see more, tougher variants of the sharks or other creatures of the deep, or just a little more variety. Unique great whites with scars and gashes, Makos that are three times their normal size and aggressive; maybe remora's or lamprey's that can bite onto the player and cause damage-over-time, needing to be cut off. Seeing a blue whale swim by off to the side of the depths before disappearing into the darkness.
Lastly, I'd love to see some of the more classic monsters. Creature from the Black Lagoon type of stuff, or a version of the Kraken that can pull you towards it or throw you around a bit without doing tons of damage.
Basically, normal creatures; as much as I'd love to go bring the pain to the Deep Ones, I don't think this is the game for it.
I actually entirely agree. I'd LOVE to see these guys take a crack at a Lovecraft mythos game! Exploring R'lyeh, attacking the underwater city off the coast of Innsmouth, seeing the gods that the natives worshipped in the pacific islands far away, would be incredible.
I just don't want it here. This game nails the feeling of tension, something being just a tiny bit off with the world we explore, the feeling that the animals have just a little bit more hate than normal. This feels a lot closer to something like Deep Blue Sea in a game form with Sirens, as opposed to something more out there a la Lovecraft. I'd rather see that in a totally new game, built from the ground up to handle this.
If they did go Lovecraft? I'd pay serious money to see these guys do a take on the movie Underwater, or a similar premise.
