Funnily enough I almost made the same mistake and left without the log on the ground, so I started running towards it as the game faded out, then I heard the pickup noise as the game went completely black and the cutscenes started.
Sure enough, after the credits I found that I had the log picked up in the nick of time.
I'm sure you'll still kill Provence plenty more times so don't worry about the log.
