Is Tectonic Surge's Gravity Reduction Inconsistent?

I've been trying to clear the In the Clouds Trial, for a bit, and it feel like the gravity reduction doesn't always trigger. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there some kind of mechanism to it I'm not aware of or is it a glitch?

you need to keep the jump key pressed for the reduction to stick
press the skill and keep the jump pressed

as with all gravity reductions, you need to hold the jump key.

that much I have been doing. If it's just that as a requirement then it definitely feels glitched to me.

It doesn't help that you gain drastically less height if you're pressing left or right movement
makes the feel of the ability just icky

It's particularly the side jumps when I notice it. particularly when I do two consecutively. It feels like sometimes I get significantly less air time, even when I'm holding the jump button all the way through.

for me it seems to be very buggy when im using the ´up to jump´ setting, but with that turned off it seems to work fine

Okay, after a bit more testing, I think I've figured out what's going on. When I activate tectonic surge while moving UPWARD, it acts the way I would expect it to, but if I'm falling or on the ground when I trigger it, it seems to lose the low gravity effect. Can anyone confirm this? Is this how it should be functioning?
