Poor Decisions (First initial thoughts)
Some opinions from someone who started at the beginning with Risk of Rain 1. (This now includes edits after some new information)

EDIT I ended up purchasing the game to play with friends :)

EDIT 1. You delisted the original, terrible move. 1. The original is (unknown if intentionally) softblocked from quicksearch, but still exists: https://store.steampowered.com/app/248820/Risk_of_Rain_2013/
2. Instead of patching the original, you just made this. A 2D sequel would have been better instead.
3. I asked myself, why would they do this? Welp, then I saw, Publisher: Gearbox Publishing

Hard pass. Sorry y'all, being like other money hungry devs and publishers isn't the right play for the indie space, imo. However, the free market will do as it pleases, and that's okay too. Good luck!

If you were actually a RoR1 player you would understand that the first game was made in GameMaker, and if you knew anything about game development you would understand that you don't simply 'patch' when going to a different engine (looked around and I can't get a definitive answer on the actual engine being used so I'm probably wrong on that). RoR2 IS the sequel to RoR1, this is the remake of RoR1. RoR1 is horrible to play (mostly multiplayer) so it's only natural that they would delist the inferior version over the far better one.

Just played ror1 to check and it plays way better than this game so I would have to disagree

Next person to say that this should have been a free update/patch on the GameMaker engine needs to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reality check themselves.

I honestly don't know anything about GameMaker other than what you just posted. RoRR was listed at 15$, on sale for less than 13. That doesn't strike me as greedy in any way and so far has been fantastic.

What do you mean by this? The game is still available on steam? If they had actually removed it I would have been mad, the original is still moddable with stuff like Starstorm.

you can't just patch a game thats made on an older engine. besides, the original isn't delisted, it's HERE

Your opinion is of course your own, but-
1. The original game is still in the store. It has a (2013) tag on it.

2. This game melds a lot of items and even characters from RoR2 into the game. It's essentially a third game in all but name and the final boss. Speaking of Providence. His new fight is FANTASTIC. That final phase is new and insane.

3. RoR2 was also published by Gearbox. Did you skip that game as well? Gearbox owns the IP now, and as much as I would have rathered Hopoo keep and expand the IP, this is more of a send off from them than we could have ever expected.

This response was mostly good overall. I updated the original post to bold out the point of the bullet, as a 2d sequel would've been better than a remake of ror1 if patching isn't feasible. I stand by that.

I found out after the fact - but the original doesn't show up under quicksearch - which is what led to my premature conclusion that it was gone. I've corrected the original post.

Yep, I found out after and made a correction to the original post. It still doesn't show up under quick search - unsure if intentional.

What do you mean send-off? Are they done with the IP?

Gearbox now owns the IP and hopoo no longer is working on the second game. hopoo is a very, very small company, like maybe 5 people? They weren't planning on making any more of it, from what I recall reading, so this is like a last gift to the fans, because the original had glaring issues due to it being their first.

Now they've learned so much and they can apply all they've learned to the remake, which includes proper netcode. I know there's other issues that people have brought up, but... Hey, at least we have actual multiplayer netcode and it's not hamachi central anymore. They can only improve the game from here.

Hopoo does not own the IP anymore so yes

Why wouldn't Gearbox contract them to continue making more? (Besides the obvious Gearbox being Gearbox reasons)
