Use artifact of command. Guarantees you necessary items. Artifact is easy mode in RoR two, it makes RoR 1 a bit easier.
Compared to ROR2, this game is much more RNG heavy, as ROR2 added many more ways to mitigate RNG (ie, Newt's Shop, Scrappers / 3D Printers, Trishops, etc). In Risk of Rain 1 / Returns, you get fewer items per run but they are more powerful, so which items specifically happen to drop makes a pretty huge difference compared to the sequel.
The game doesnt get easy peasy until you start really filling out your item pool and getting artifacts, just like in ror2 and the original. Focus on getting those item unlocks to help give you a better edge.
As for the difficulty, rainstorm aside, RoR1 was, atleast imo, more difficult than this one.
That said, they do have some special difficulty stuff built in that you can modify under the Rules tab, right before you start a run. This will let you set up stuff to make it more like classic, but you can also change damage output for you or enemies. So if you feel like theyre too beefy and do too much damage, raise your damage and nerf theirs :P
As captain planet would say, 'the power is yours~!'
