First impression is that everything does feel more cartoony and I personally don't like that.
I've only played a few trials but I don't really find enjoyment in them, but I can also see what the devs were aiming for and why people would enjoy them. Suffice to say I do have very personalised tastes and I'm very picky when it comes to the games I give the light of day... these days.
It's normal for people to be divided on these types of conversations because what original fans experienced the first time around and their expectations and hopes can fall short and therefore altogether ruin the experience. Newer players don't have those experiences and find the newer additions a mandatory feature integral to their enjoyment.
My main gripe is readability issues, there's a lot of times enemies sink into the background, there's terrain that looks walkable that has no collision and my second biggest gripe is how unresponsive the controls have been compared to the original.
The artstyle's had an improvement artistically, but I feel like it's gone back a few big steps for readability, there's not much contrast between the playable space and the non-interactive elements of gameplay that it makes it difficult to tell what's something to be weary of and what isn't from a glance.
That said, I feel like this game would be great for people who have never played the original RoR based on other people's experiences, the providence trials were a really fun concept and I liked some of the new enemies they added, but I really hope they fix the control responsiveness down the line.
If they gave owners of the Original a bigger discount, I would've considered buying it. But it just seems like the Original with better graphics and some new features, which isn't enough for me when I already played the game, thanks.
However, one of the hidden walkable areas I found in returns was literally 6 pixels of rope poking out from an already hidden area you need to jump through a solid wall to enter (I only found out about it's existence from claymen kindly showing me) and climb down to get an artifact.
Things the game needs
- bug fixes
- animation cancelling on ability use (it feels mad clunky right now)
- spawn rates fixed for chests
- map sizes or base movement speed adjusted
- a lot of providence trials need adjusting because they jump off the cliff from fun and interesting into aggravating
