SPOILER warning if you don't want the specific information on taming the animals:
The dog is located in the dungeon on the starting island, near the end in the chamber before the teleporter. You just need to hover over him and then click on the little 'tame' icon that will come up.
The cat is located in the main town, and you'll need to put down a bait box with sardines in it.
The tiger is located on desert islands, and requires a bait box with rainbow trout.
The wolf only spawns during harvest moon events. I occasionally see it on the starting island over by the small island with the hardwood trees/pumpkin patches (and on the main land close by), but I haven't been able to get it to tame there. Not sure if that is a bug or working as intended. If you go to the proper hardwood island during the harvest moon you'll see them everywhere, I've been able to tame it fine just a little away from the teleporter.
For the tiger in particular, I have found it to be generally the slowest tame. You'll want to wait until you see it around nearby and then put down the bait box (it doesn't always spawn straight away and can run around a lot). I have personally found it important to stay NEAR the bait box (ideally with it in sight, but you want to leave a bit of space so as not to scare off the tiger, so don't stand right on top of it). You should not walk away to explore the rest of the island you're on, or enter into any dungeons. I tried this numbers of times and the tiger was never waiting for me when I went back. My new strategy is to place it on a desert island near a fishing spot or 2 (my map seed has 3 fishing spots on the far end of one of the islands with the mini desert dungeons) and then put the bait box just so it'll be near the far corner of your sight from each of the spots. I then just hang out until the tiger comes up. I've tested it a couple of times and the tiger can take anywhere from near instantaneous to more time than it takes to clear all 3 fishing spots.
I find the cat to be the best helper to pick up loot. It is fast and does a real good job. The dog is okay but slow and does not work as well as the cat. I have not been impressed with the tiger helping me fight. Half the time the tiger just follows me around and looks cool.
