I was enjoying the changes until I hit the grind wall
Am I missing something here? I played the original version through to 100%. I had a few issues with it, but enjoyed it.

I was enjoying exploring the new version, seeing bits and pieces of the old world spliced into the new place, doing the general grind through it... but the whole Bridgewater thing is really bugging me. The only way to make any money is to sell wood, clay, stone and glass... I am so sick of cutting down trees trying to upgrade my backpack to 'advance' the town. I figured the first town advancement would do something... but really, besides allowing me to build in the town, big woop there, what was the point of it... where are the vendors of old... where arr the veggie vendors, where are the weapon sellers... its just a boring mess and I am tired of cutting down trees.

After you get town plots and build houses on them, click on the mailbox to select who to move in.
Some of these people provides a florist and a farmers marked where you can sell resources.
I would recommend getting the farmers marked as soon as possible.
However, it's limited how many money you can make that way.
You can make decent amount of money from cleaning out the caves and pick up all coins along the way, they often lie on the table inside houses etc, can be hard to see.
Also make sure to fish in lakes in caves, since you can catch fish here you can sell for much more than regular fish.
If you still need money, look in this forum, I saw a post eailer explaining all ways to make money in the new update.

I chose the Florist to move into my first house.
I make most of my money (so far) selling flowers, which I both harvest in the wild and grow in a farm when I have enough seeds accumulated. There are other ways to be sure, but I try to save wood and stone for building and refining and such.

IN any case, I just built my 4th house in town.

But I hear you. When I get sick of the grinding, I take a break and go play an H game.

I swear, the minimalist build of this game is its downfall... there are no hints on what you are supposed to be doing. It never would have occurred to me that houses were for others and not for me. This is the game you learn by banging your head against it until it works.

This, exactly

It was so obvious to me that those plots were for houses for others. So far I haven't encountered much that didn't make sense or was too hard to figure out. I actually really enjoy that the game isn't holding my hand every step of the way. It's an open world experience and I, for one, hope they keep it this way and don't start holding my hand or take away the freedom there is now.

Gold coin is easy to make, just grow flowers and fruit/foods. Sell the excess you do not need. As for this "massive" learning curve, what are you going on about? This game is beyond simple to learn.... yikes...

pretty sure you are the one saying massive ♥ Just because something is obvious to some does not mean it is to everyone.

I'm pretty sure Minecraft had/has the same complaints, and that game is way more complex these days...take your time and learn as you go. There are plenty of answers in the discussions if you get stuck

The mailboxes are right there... Also I'm pretty sure there's a tutorial popup that bugs you about this.

At some point communicating things to the player stops being a developer problem.

The grind is my least favourite part of the game, but I think I also did more of it than I needed to? You can put off those last few bag unlocks and town upgrades until you're on the third dungeon or so, and by that point the gold drops are bigger and you've got enough materials for some water towers and such to help with farming (which is the biggest source of income).

But... yeah that first bag unlock. Ugh.

The grind really hit now that I have the 500 gold backpack. The next backpack up needs 1000 gold, tons of dark souls, potions, etc. And that is necessary since the next town upgrade requires 450 count of some items and the 500 gold backpack can only hold 400.

So I guess I work on killing the voidboar and then just grind for several hours so I can see what the pirate and the wandering merchant offer? I have an alchemy table with no recipes and still have no access to wheat or oil (and thus bread). Something feels really off about the speed of progression once you reach this point.

I just reached that point myself, like two minutes ago. Then I looked up, saw my CPU was running at 76c, and decided to take a break.

How'd you get the alchemy table? Does it build from the workbench or from the Tab menu?

It builds from an upgraded workbench, yeah. But I don't know where you get the recipes. Maybe you are just supposed to try every combo of plant and void souls (and light ore) until you find something that works?

While the game is loading, there is always a message with some kind of advice in the lower right corner... building houses in the plots and moving villagers into them is one of them.

And don't forget this is an early access game, it's no finished... of course it needs polishing!

You get the recipes by trying the possible ingredients and seeing if that gives you any output... just drop the ingredients in the boxes and if all boxes are filled and the output is a big red X, that isn't a valid recipe.

I still haven't killed the voidboar. I'm lazy.

For oil, look around the islands until you find a Mediterranean-looking one. You'll know it when you see it. You'll find a couple of olive trees on that island -- chop them down, and you'll get olives and seeds. Take the seeds home, grow olive trees, chop, rinse, repeat.

You make olive oil with a refinery. Yes, the same machine that turns rocks into iron shards can squeeze the oil out of olives. Weeeeeiiiiird technology! Flour, too.

You have to buy wheat seeds from the farmer's market -- you can't find them. Everything else, you can find somewhere.

For dark essence, I posted in another thread how to get it easily: Once you're geared up, there's a spot near the end of the home island dungeon where you can stand on a sort of little cliff with a void murloc spawner right below you, so they have to run up around the end of the cliff. You can stand there and farm them as long as you want, and get a all the dark essences you need. There are other spawners that are easier to get to, but this has the best yield that I've found.
