The Dumbest Gamer in History
Once you have blueberries in your inventory, how do you eat them? I can't do anything with them but make a bloop sound when I click them.

Never seen a game where I needed help using items in inventory, but I'm definitely feeling like the dumbest gamer in history having to ask.

Hm.. how clunky. But it works. My thanks.

Pretty sure that is in the mini tutorial when you start. :)

It definitely is.

And it's definitely clunky. If you need a tutorial to figure out how to use an item in inventory, the interface sucks. The job of interface designers is to make things intuitive, not design some draconian yarf muppet interface and then say "we'll explain it in the tutorial."

I just started and I feel the same way. This game has made some...interesting choices. Not being able to click to select from the bar when you have the option to have full control with the mouse is...odd. And the inventory system, showing everything at once, even when you dont have it...except tools? Hmm..

Personally I like that it's different. I don't want every game to use the same exact way of doing things.
With the way the inventory in this game works, it makes sense to me, plus it's explained in the tutorial, which I personally say is enough.

That I do agree with, the way it displays things could (and likely will) be improved over time. This is one of the blessings of Early Access, the devs get to see what does and doesn't work for people.

So you like it when people reinvent the wheel? When a wheel is all you need...

here's an idea: make objects usable from inventory.

That's the wheel. It didn't need reinventing; objects have been usable from inventory in games for decades.

You need a tutorial for Adobe Premiere or Maya. Just about any game that needs a tutorial has poorly designed interface because there aren't enough features to justify a complex, non-intuitive interface.

We only get so long on the clock before we can refund a game. Tutorials are time sinks in games, and good games (like Valheim) don't need them.

I mean, the fanboys here don't HAVE to agree with me... I do interface design for a living, so perhaps I'm more sensitive to what makes it good and what exposes dev idiocy or bad management.
Suzaku Dec 21, 2022 @ 4:49pm
I see no redesign of the wheel here. Practically every game with a hotbar is "Click and drag item/ability to hotbar. Press button to use it". Next you're going to tell me that WASD is a bizarre new way to move your character.

And Valheim has a bird that tutorializes everything so hard that people use dev commands and mods just to get rid of him.

You did name the thread quite well, though.
Draegon1993 Dec 21, 2022 @ 4:49pm
Yeesh, you are ridiculously antagonistic towards a game that is clearly still being worked on. Essentially calling the devs idiots for not having something the way you want it is beyond rude. Good day to you.

That bird really does not want to shut up, haha.
