Asuka's Taimanin art makes her a ranged character. Ive tested using Nino, Ibuki, Faust, etc and they definitely boost her.
As far as I can tell, a melee attack in this game would be like if your character hit their opponent with a sword. But if the sword shoots some sort of chi blast or something, then it is counted as a ranged attack.
Emily, for example... is ranged in nearly all of her attacks. Aegis tackle however is a melee attack (she is actually striking with her body).
Rinko on the other hand, is mostly a melee character, but when those sword flourishes come out at the end of her combos, or on wind slice, they are counted as ranged moves. The meteor is a ranged move.
Asuka's basic attacks are melee without the taimanin art.. but with the taimanin art she shoots wind energy (or something) with each strike, making them ranged. She still has some melee moves though.
If you have Nino you can test everything on a move by move basis.
