I was already 12 when I first played Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Back then, for Christmas, I got the Sega Master System 2 - Christmas Set (my first console :D). Which included Alex Kidd, Sonic and Champions of Europe. Alex Kidd was integrated into the Master System. That was really great back then.
I played it when I was six (1987). T_T First game ever.
And I still play it on the original SMS once/twice a year.

Dunno how old I was, but I played it because it was built in on my original Master System.
First they remade Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap and now this, my favourite two Master System games

It's actually not really, when you take a look at how things were.
Nintendo didn't rule Europe, in fact, they made a horrible job here with the NES. Not only did they leave distributors confused by dividing Europe into 2 Zonbes (PAL A and PAL B and they weren't compatible with each other) but on top of that originally also struck a deal with Mattel (and that wasn't compatible to either PAL A or PAL B versions!) and it was just a total mess. The Atari 2600 in Europe survived past the US Video Game Crash (which gets blown out of proportion usually) and the Master System had a strong showing later. Thankfully, you can find a ton of old magazines from that time.
Sega struck great deals with Mastertronic, Ariolasoft and other companies to distribute and advertise the system, while Nintendo was bumbling around. That's why the MS was such a big hit here in Europe. It failed in the US because Sega had no offices there and they sold the rights to Tonka, who had no clue what to do with the System, they never promoted a video game system before. When Sega bought back those rights in 1989, it was too late, since they also already introduced the Mega Drive/Genesis and they just bought back the US rights for the Converter, in hopes the horrible MS2 would maybe sell for poor people.
And Alex Kidd replaced pretty much all other previous versions of the Master System Power Base (Hand On, the Light Phaser Pack with Safari Hunt, the 3D version, there were a ton of versions originally, later it really just slimmed down to the MS with Alex Kidd, until that game got replaced with Sonic on the later MS2 versions)

But here in Europe, if i think back, just thinking back to my school, my class back then, we had 6 people with a Game Boy, 3 people with a Master System and 1 who had an NES that was around 1991 and at that time the MS1 and then the crappy MS2 had Alex Kidd built in anyway, so of course it was the first game everybody experienced. One stat i saw was that he MS outsold the NES 3:1 across all western Europe/UK overall.
Even here in Germany, NES advertisements only picked up around 1991 with the Set that contained the 3 Game Cartridge (SMB, World Cup and Tetris) with the SNES coming out in 1992. In fact, SMB3 only came out in August 1991 here in Europe, 1 year later the SNES dropped with SMW. Sega never had such crazy delays

In South America, especially Brazil the popularity of the Master System is insane, of course it's largely to the fact that people can't afford modern system (the PS2 even only started to get popular in 2006 around there and only later did companies notice that the people are so poor they can't afford anything, so the consoles became a lot cheaper, hence why brazilians actually can afford a PS4 now without selling their kidneys) and TecToy even produced new games and ports, like the infamous 20 em 1, which makes Action 52 on the NES look like a AAA product :D

When I was young, I had a copy of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on the Xbox 360, and I played a lot of games on there. That was how I found the Alex Kidd franchise after playing the game for the genesis and had a blast playing it.

I think that's around the time, yeah. I'm from 1984, and I got my Master System II (with Alex built in, and a cartridge copy of Sonic included) for my birthday in '91.

I think i was about 3-4 years old when I first played the original on my bros Master System, wasn't the first game I ever played but its defo one of.
The Master System was the first console I ever personally owned though(mine had Sonic built in) Never got very far in the game as a kid I just vividly remember loving to ride the Motorbike and the rock paper scissors :)

I have to say I really enjoyed playing through the DX version this evening it really scratched my nostalgia itch, so congrats devs on a great job and thanks for helping us revisit our childhoods for a few hours
