Dont understand how to get "special points"

In the game, I am level 4 now. I have gotten a skill point for every level I've gone but haven't earned any "special points" which I need to buy the lock picking skill. How the hell do I get these points if I don't get them from leveling up?

There are certain items you'll find in certain houses that, the first time you steal them, you'll get a special point. They've got a pinkish aura around them and you'll be told you got a special point when you steal them.

Just make sure you make it back to your safe house afterwards because if you have to load a save after getting one, it's possible it won't be there after you load AND you won't get the point.
It happened with my very first one; my save file is forever going to be 1 skill point shy of what it should be because this game is a broken piece of ♥♥♥♥.
