i creeped up to a dog, was standing almost on top of him and after 5 seconds he fell asleep.
i never used it besides that one time tbh
Note: It does not work instantly, even if you stand behind someone or next to someone, it will take about 3 seconds to trigger

Just hit house 201, saw a panel on the wall for "gas detectors." Guess you can turn them off, so long as you find the panel or can remote-hack it with a laptop. If the house doesn't have a control panel for them, probably not unless the crowbar would work (and then the noise gets you noticed anyhow).
Just remember to remove the respirator when you leave the property and are clear of the gas cloud. Not 100% sure but I think it does make you slightly more noticeable.
