DirectX/Vulkan
I have no idea what DirectX and Vulkan are (I'll go Google), but whichever I choose, it doesn't work :(

If I try DirectX I get an error message about dropping directx from the command line, and if I try to use Vulkan it tells me I need to have Vulkan.

Does this mean that my PC can't play this?

It's possible, but without knowing the exact error or the specs of your PC it's difficult to say with certainty. Do you know what graphics card you have and can you provide the exact error you are receiving when DirectX fails?

Vulkan is more experimental and unstable, there is some people who will benefit from it, but most users would use DirectX

It's an office laptop, not meant nor suitable for gaming. It has no proper GPU.

The error dialogue I get says

DirectX 12 is not supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument.

I don't think I particularly have a graphics card. Not sure how to find the spec of what is inside the box.

To find your PC information
Click on the Steam help button at the top of your screen
Click on system information
You will find your processor info here and your graphics card info, Ram, etc,

Each line can be copy/pasted using control "C" and control "V"

This should take just a few minutes of your time.

These are mine

I'm afraid it's below our recommended specs and it has shader model 6.4, ours needs 6.6

Thanks, Claire. I don't really understand what those words mean, but I get the gist - my PC can't play this game. Ah, well.

I see the store listing for this game says the following, but it wasn't clear to me from that that my PC falls short.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system OS: Windows 10 Processor: Intel i5 Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: Nvidia 980Ti at 1920x1080 DirectX: Version 12 Network: Broadband Internet connection Storage: 2 GB available space Sound Card: Integrated

Where can I find a clearer explanation of what PC spec this game requires? It looks like this might be a good opportunity for me to learn some stuff about modern PCs.

If you check this post, it details the main GPU requirement for the game:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1332100/discussions/0/4360121020306415104/

Your particular GPU is listed as an "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630", which is an on-chip solution rather than a dedicated GPU. Now, depending on when your chip was manufactured, it either supports Shader Model 6.4 or 6.5. Sadly however, the game requires Shader Model 6.6 due to using Unreal Engine's latest features.

On-chip graphics solutions are rarely ideal for gaming, so we'd definitely recommend investing in a dedicated GPU. Your local computer shop would be best placed to advise you on the best solution for your particular system.

Thanks. I don't think my computer is the sort that can take add on graphics cards, so to play your game I probably need to buy a new computer. Not planning on doing that just yet 😄

Out of interest how could I tell that this game needs that particular version of this shader thing, and how can I tell which version is provided by any particular graphics card or computer?

I am not very computer literate but after reading all this I am more confused. I am getting this message - > DirectX 12 is not supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument <- And I have tried inputting one or the other and even both but nothing's doing. It still bring me that error message.
Can someone explain to me where and how to input these - PLEEEASE ???
I have a...

Video Cards Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 - Your graphics card is an integrated one, but since it is both integrated and was manufactured in 2013, it's not really designed for gaming. Like the message says, your card doesn't support Dx12, which is necessary to run the game.

Unfortunately this is a hardware limitation, and your current system is incapable of running the game. There is no software fix or anything you can input to bypass that. Your only option currently is to upgrade your hardware, specifically your graphics card to a standalone unit.

I've spent a couple of days trying to understand all this a bit better. The recommended specification for a video card is "NVIDIA 2080Ti". That's this, right? https://uk.pcmag.com/graphic-cards/117494/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-founders-edition

Am I correctly understanding that you are expecting people to spend over £1,000 just on the graphics card to be able to play this game?

Nah, relax, that artice is from 2018, that graphic card is 6 years old. And definitely much more than enough for this game.
My AMD RX 580 from 2017 (so even older) was an average level card even back then (while the 2080TI was very high end) and make this game runs fine. Not at its best, but fine. (No, don't buy a 580 today!)
Today there are much better options at a good price.

You just need an average modern graphic card, what you have is a 11 years old integrated thing, even if it somehow supported modern technologies, the game would be a slideshow at best.

Probably the required/recommended page will be properly updated when the game is released.
