Graphic Design not profitable
I have just set up a graphic design business that runs 9-5 seven days a week. With 5 designers in the building at any given time I'm only doing one billable hour most days, there are some occasional spikes to around 5 billable hours but it's not reliable. My expenses are around $2,400 including salaries, rent and marketing. This means I am not close to even breaking even. What am I doing wrong?

Graphic Designers certainly can make decent money. For example, you can see one of mine on this screenshot:

First, you have to make sure there is demand. I would aim for higher than 40% demand if you can. Second, graphic designers are not popular on the weekends, so I'd only open Mon-Fri. And since you only have 5 designers in the building, I'd probably ease up on the marketing.

If you want to make really good money, you definitely want a large office that can support 50 graphic designers. That way you can invest more in marketing and have a steady flow of customers.

EDIT: Here's a screen capture I took just now. I have four graphic design offices. They are all profitable. The lowest profit is from an office in the Garment district with only 10 graphic designers.

I looked into it and the demand was at 33%, which wasn't ideal but I thought it would be manageable. I have managed to turn it around to the point where it is profitable. All I did was get rid of the weekend hours (like suggested), lower the marketing budget (like suggested, and I also bought out a competitor a few buildings down and shut them down. I'm now profiting around $2k a day, whilst not amazing it's definitely better.
