Getting executions consnistently?

So I unlocked the skill that restores EP on execution, now my question is - how do you make sure you don't actually overkill your enemies? Just hope for the best?

It seems a bit RNG to me, but there's some REALLY extended combos you can do with minimal heavy attacks. If you focus more on do a lot of light hits with the fist vs max damage with heavies I usually see a good number of executions.

The drill for me is what doesn't get me many executions at all
